Da Lat weather in December: coolest days of the year, dry skies, Flower Festival

If you picture a tropical Southeast Asian December, Da Lat will surprise you. Da Lat weather in December is the dry season in full swing: clear blue skies, dry sunshine at midday, the coolest daytime temperatures of the year and nights cold enough for a proper jacket and a thick duvet. It is also the city’s busiest festive month, with the Flower Festival, Christmas and New Year. This guide covers December alone: climate numbers, the last 10 Decembers, cold snaps reported in the press, the 2026 outlook, blooms, crowds and a 3-day plan.

Da Lat weather in December: dry season, coolest days of the year#

Da Lat (Đà Lạt) sits about 1,500 m up on the Langbiang Plateau in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. It has two seasons: rain from roughly May to October and a dry season from late in the year to around April. If November is the handover, December is when the dry season settles in properly. Rain becomes rare, skies are usually clear, the wind picks up and the midday sun feels warm without being hot. Locals call it the “beautiful cold” season.

One detail most guides miss: in the long-term table, December has the lowest average high of the whole year (21.4°C), so it has the coolest days. The coldest nights come a little later, in January (average low 11.7°C). Put simply, Da Lat weather in December and January make up the coldest pair of months: December is coolest by day, January coldest at night.

Da Lat weather in December by the numbers#

The table below comes from the Da Lat climate table on Wikipedia, which draws on the Da Lat gazetteer, with records from 1918-1940 and 1964-1998. These are long-term averages for a station at around 1,500 m, not a forecast for 2026. This time we put December between November and January so you can see the dry season deepen.

What Da Lat weather in December means for your trip

First, rain stops being the main worry. About 36 mm for the whole month is roughly 15% of October’s total, spread over fewer than six days. Most 3-4 day trips will stay dry, though a thin water-resistant jacket is still worth packing.

Second, the day-night swing is what you need to plan for. Midday sits around 21°C, nights around 13°C, and the record low is 2.6°C. You might be comfortable in a long-sleeve tee at noon and want a padded jacket, scarf and gloves at 5am the next day.

Third, you get about 30 more hours of sunshine than in November. Clear, dry air is great for photos but hard on skin and lips. Visitors from humid Singapore or Kuala Lumpur often say the dry cold feels sharper than the thermometer suggests.

Da Lat weather in December over the last 10 years#

To see how much Da Lat weather in December varies between years, we downloaded December data for 2016 to 2025 from Open-Meteo on September 28, 2026. This is gridded reanalysis data on a roughly 25 km grid; its night temperatures tend to run warmer than a station in town and its rain totals can differ, so use it to compare years.

Daytime highs are remarkably steady at 20-22°C. Rain splits the years into two groups: eight of the ten Decembers had less than 70 mm, and December 2019 had essentially no rain at all. But December 2016 saw about 269 mm over 20 days, and 2024 topped 100 mm. So Da Lat weather in December is usually dry, yet every few years a lingering end-of-season rain makes it a wet one.

The coldest-night column also understates what a town thermometer shows. The model puts the coldest night of December 2025 at about 9.1°C, while Tuoi Tre (December 31, 2025) reported an actual reading of 8.6°C in Da Lat that morning. On early mornings in valleys or on open hills, knock another 1-2°C off the table.

Cold snaps reported in recent Decembers#

Averages do not capture how cold Da Lat weather in December can feel. The chilliest days usually arrive when a cold air mass pushes down from the north and meets a clear, still night. Here are some recent examples, with publication dates.

• Flower Festival opening week, 2024: Tuoi Tre (December 4, 2024), citing Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said strong cold air would reach the Central Highlands from December 9, 2024, bringing Da Lat lows of about 12-14°C with sunny days of 20-24°C and little rain.
• New Year’s Eve 2025: Da Lat recorded 8.6°C on the morning of December 31, 2025, due to cold air and the city’s altitude (Tuoi Tre).
• Right after December: Dan Tri (January 9, 2026) described residents buying space heaters and bathroom heat lamps as temperatures hovered around 8°C from the night of January 8 into January 9, 2026.

The December record low of 2.6°C dates from decades ago. Recent cold snaps in the press sit around 8-12°C, which is plenty cold for most visitors: many budget rooms have no heating, and a thin blanket makes for a long night. When you book, ask about thick duvets, reliable hot water and whether a heater is available.

Da Lat weather in December 2026: the seasonal outlook#

As of September 28, 2026, Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting had not yet issued its monthly climate bulletin for December 2026; these usually come out late in the preceding month. So we rely on published outlooks, with dates.

On August 15, 2026, Tuoi Tre reported the center’s outlook: from December 2026 to February 2027, average temperatures are expected to run 0.5-1.5°C above normal nationwide and 1.5-2°C above normal in the Central Highlands and the south. From December 2026 to January 2027, cold air surges are expected to be weaker than average. In December 2026, moderate to heavy rain is still possible from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai, in Khanh Hoa and in the eastern parts of the provinces from Gia Lai to Lam Dong.

More recently, on September 15, 2026, VietnamPlus quoted the center’s director, Mai Van Khiem: El Niño is almost certain to stay strong to very strong through October-December 2026, with rainfall 20-40% below normal across much of the country, most clearly on the south-central coast, in the Central Highlands and in the south.

What that means for travelers

If these outlooks hold, Da Lat weather in December 2026 may be drier and a little milder than usual, with fewer deep cold snaps than December 2025. Good news if you dislike the cold; slightly disappointing if you are coming for a “real winter.” Heavy rain is still possible on the eastern slopes, meaning the roads up from Khanh Hoa. What blooms in December: early cherry blossoms and the last pink grass#

Cherry blossoms: possibly early, depending on the year

Da Lat’s pink “mai anh đào” (a Himalayan wild cherry, Prunus cerasoides) is the most common reason people search for Da Lat weather in December. The honest answer is “maybe.” VnExpress (August 16, 2022) says the trees bloom from December to early February depending on the weather, and Thanh Nien (January 1, 2026) describes the usual window as late December to mid-January, naming the Cau Dat tea hills (about 25 km from the center), Mong Dao Nguyen (about 17 km) and Hung Vuong Street.

The 2025-2026 season came early. According to Viet Nam News (January 1, 2026), trees at the Cau Dat tea hill had been blooming for over a week by New Year’s Day, triggered by cold weather at the end of December. VnExpress (January 6, 2026) put the season 10-15 days ahead of the usual mid-January start. Our reading: if December 2026 is warmer than usual, as the outlook suggests, blooms may not come as early. If cherry blossoms are your main goal, late December to mid-January is the safer window.

The city is also investing in the season. VietNamNet Global (January 29, 2026) reported a new two-kilometer lit viewing route on Tran Hung Dao Street for the Cherry Blossom Festival, Da Lat Spring 2026. For outfit colors that work against pale pink, see what to wear in Da Lat.

Pink grass: the tail end

VnExpress (November 26, 2023) says the pink grass season runs from early November to the end of December and looks best around late November. You still have a chance in the first half of December, but the hills fade as the month goes on. Specific hills and the best hours are in our November guide.

Wild sunflowers: a late bonus, mostly outside the city

Wild sunflowers peak in October and November. Still, Tuoi Tre (October 31, 2024) noted a late season in 2024 that was still going when the Flower Festival opened, especially in Hiep An, Di Linh, Bao Loc and Bao Lam. If you come up by road from Ho Chi Minh City, you may spot late patches along the way, but do not expect golden hillsides in town.

The 2026 Da Lat Flower Festival and opening-week weather#

This is only a summary of how Da Lat weather in December and the crowds affect the festival; the countdown, schedule and highlights are in the Flower Festival 2026 section of our homepage.

According to Lam Dong’s investment, trade and tourism promotion center (June 15, 2026) and Thanh Nien (June 16, 2026), the 11th Da Lat Flower Festival, themed “Da Lat, a harmony of flowers and music,” opens on the evening of December 19, 2026 at Lam Vien Square and closes with a New Year 2027 show on December 31. VietnamPlus (September 15, 2026) lists 11 main programs and 25 side events, for the first time spread across the newly merged Lam Dong Province.

December 19 falls on a Saturday this year, so the opening weekend will be busy. In the last two weeks of the month, Da Lat weather in December is normally dry, which suits outdoor shows, but Lam Vien Square sits right by the lake and gets cold and breezy after dark. For reference, Tuoi Tre News reported about 13°C at a free concert there on December 21, 2024. If you plan to watch the opening, bring a warm jacket, a scarf and something to sit on.

Christmas, New Year, school holidays and room prices#

Beyond Da Lat weather in December, crowds shape your trip. December 2026 stacks the Flower Festival, Christmas and New Year. The calendar: December 24 is a Thursday, December 25 a Friday, December 31 a Thursday and January 1, 2027 a Friday, so Vietnam’s New Year holiday joins the weekend for a three-day break from January 1 to 3.

Christmas in Da Lat

Bao Lam Dong, the provincial newspaper (December 25, 2025), reported 16-18°C on Christmas Eve 2025, with residents and visitors filling Da Lat Cathedral (the “Chicken Church”), Don Bosco, Lam Vien Square, the night market and Tran Phu Street; the 8pm to 9:15pm mass at the cathedral was the busiest time. New Year: not always sold out

Many people assume Da Lat is always full at year-end, whatever Da Lat weather in December brings. It depends on the year. Thanh Nien (December 30, 2025) found that just before New Year 2026, most accommodations still had plenty of rooms at normal rates, commonly VND500,000-800,000 a night; only some four-star hotels were full for January 1-4 after bookings more than a week out. Weekends with the festival and the nights of December 24 and 31 are a different story.

School holidays in Singapore, Malaysia and Australia

December is holiday season for many of our English readers. According to Singapore’s Ministry of Education calendar, the year-end school holidays run from November 21 to December 31, 2026. Malaysia’s school calendar has the year-end break from early December (December 5 for most states) to December 31, 2026. In Australia, Term 4 ends on December 17 in New South Wales and December 18 in Victoria, according to the state education departments. Expect more regional travelers on flights and in hotels from mid-December, especially around Christmas.

Our advice: book early for the festival opening weekend (December 19-20), Christmas Eve and December 31 to January 3; weekdays from December 7 to 18 are easier. How Da Lat in December compares with home#

Our readers come mostly from Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Russia and Korea, and each group experiences Da Lat weather in December differently. The figures below are December daily means from Wikipedia climate tables (1991-2020 normals, viewed September 28, 2026).

• Singapore and Malaysia: Singapore averages 26.8°C in December with about 332 mm of rain over roughly 19 days; Kuala Lumpur averages 27.1°C with about 281 mm. Da Lat will be about 10°C cooler on average, much drier and genuinely cold at dawn. Pack a padded or fleece-lined jacket, not just a hoodie.
• Australia: Sydney averages 22.1°C in December, the start of summer. Da Lat’s afternoons will feel like a mild spring day, but nights drop well below a Sydney summer night.
• Korea: Seoul averages about 0.2°C in December. Da Lat will feel like early autumn; a light jacket and layers are enough, though hilltop sunrises are still chilly.
• Russia: Moscow averages about −4.4°C in December. Da Lat will feel like late spring. A fleece covers the mornings, and you will want sunscreen for the strong highland sun.

Cloud hunting in Da Lat weather in December: possible, not peak#

Some guides call December “cloud season,” but the press is more cautious. VnExpress (September 3, 2022) says spring and summer give the best cloud seas, because autumn is too rainy and strong winter winds break the clouds up. Good conditions follow high humidity, such as an afternoon shower or a heavy evening dew, and you need to be in place by 4-5am.

Our take: Da Lat weather in December is dry and windy, so thick cloud seas are rarer than from May to August. On the other hand, after a clear, still night, thin bands of fog still settle in the valleys, and December sunrises are often crystal clear. Mountain passes and getting there in December 2026#

Dry Da Lat weather in December does not make the passes risk-free. According to VnExpress International (December 4, 2025), heavy rain on the night of December 3, 2025 triggered new landslides on Prenn and Mimosa passes, just after repairs from the mid-November floods. The outlook for December 2026 also flags possible heavy rain in Khanh Hoa and the eastern parts of the provinces from Gia Lai to Lam Dong, so Khanh Le Pass (from Nha Trang) and D’Ran Pass (from Phan Rang) deserve the closest watch.

For December: book transport early for December 19, 24 and 31; cross passes in daylight, when it is warmer and fog-free; and on the festival opening weekend, expect traffic diversions in the center.

What to pack for Da Lat in December#

Packing for Da Lat weather in December is about staying warm at dawn and after dark. Expect roughly 13-21°C, with some nights down to 8-10°C. Travelers from the tropics often underestimate Da Lat weather in December. If you forget something, the night market has plenty of stalls selling sweaters, scarves and gloves. Dress children and older relatives one layer warmer than yourself for evening events.

A 3-day plan built around Da Lat weather in December#

Day 1: town, lake and festival mood

• Morning: arrive, have breakfast, then walk around Xuan Huong Lake and its flower displays once the sun is up (8-10am).

• Afternoon: Da Lat Railway Station and the tourist train to Trai Mat if seats are available; late afternoon at Lam Vien Square.
• Evening: hotpot, then the night market; on December 19 catch the festival opening, on December 24 visit the Chicken Church.

Day 2: sunrise and the eastern tea hills

• 5-6:30am: if the night was calm, head to an eastern hill for sunrise and valley fog.
• 7-10am: the Cau Dat tea hills; late in the month, look for early cherry blossoms and stop at a coffee farm (see Da Lat coffee).
• Midday: rest in town and skip the harsh dry sun.
• Afternoon: flower gardens, greenhouses or festival exhibitions.

Day 3: pine forests to the south

• Morning: ride the Da Lat cable car to Truc Lam Monastery and Tuyen Lam Lake; dress modestly and bring a jacket, as the cabins are breezy.
• Afternoon: buy local specialties, then leave and clear the passes before dark.

Is December a good time to visit Da Lat?#

If you like dry, crisp weather and a festive atmosphere, December is one of the best months. Compared with November, Da Lat weather in December is drier, sunnier and colder, with the Flower Festival and Christmas, but busier on a few peak dates. Compared with January, December has more events, while cherry blossoms are less certain. Here is our verdict.
