Da Lat weather in October: temperatures, rain, fog and how to plan around them

If you are planning a trip for late September or October, the first thing you probably want to know about Da Lat weather in October is simple: will it rain, and will it be cold? The short answer is that October is the last month of the rainy season. It still rains often, but less than in September; mornings are frequently misty, middays are pleasant and afternoons bring showers. This guide goes deep on October alone, from the climate numbers to what to wear, where to go when it pours and which mountain roads need watching in 2026.

Da Lat weather in October: the end of the rainy season, not the start of the dry one#

Da Lat, a highland city at roughly 1,500 meters (about 4,900 feet) in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, has two fairly distinct seasons. According to VnExpress (August 14, 2025, in Vietnamese), the rainy season usually runs from May to October and brings sudden thunderstorms and heavy downpours. October sits at the tail end: less relentless than August and September, but not yet as dry as December.

Instead, this page answers more specific questions: what time of day the rain falls, which mornings are likely to be misty, whether the wild sunflowers are out yet and what is unusual about 2026.

In a nutshell, Da Lat weather in October rewards slow travel: get outside early, eat a long lunch, then spend the afternoon in a cafe or a museum. If you love fog, clouds and crisp air, this is a rewarding month. If you need guaranteed sunshine for a full day of outdoor photography, December to March is the safer bet.

Da Lat weather in October by the numbers#

The table places October between September and November so you can see the trend. The figures come from the Da Lat climate table on Wikipedia, compiled from Vietnam’s Institute for Building Science and Technology and the Da Lat Gazetteer, measured at an elevation of about 1,513 meters. They are long-term averages, not a forecast for 2026.

How to read the table

The striking change is between October and November: rainfall drops from about 245 mm to about 94 mm, and the number of rainy days nearly halves. From September to October, by contrast, you lose only about four rainy days. In other words, Da Lat weather in October has more in common with September than with November. If rain is your biggest worry, the last week of October or early November is a safer choice than the first week.

The gap between day and night is about 7.5°C (13°F): a T-shirt can be enough at noon, but you will want a jacket after dark. Twenty rainy days sounds grim, but a “rainy day” here means any day with measurable rain, even a single afternoon shower. On most October days you still get several dry hours, especially in the morning.

No official source breaks the month down by week, so this section is our reading of the September-October-November trend in the table above, combined with Vietnamese press descriptions. Treat it as a guide to choosing dates, not a forecast.

Early October: still the rainy season

In the first ten days, Da Lat weather in October usually feels like September: damp, cloudy and with an afternoon downpour likely on most days. Dirt roads on the outskirts stay slippery and the waterfalls run high. If early October is your only option, keep your plans loose and stay close to the center.

Mid-October: more sun, misty mornings

By mid-month, Da Lat weather in October softens. Sunshine creeps up (October averages about 139.8 hours, against 126.5 in September), mornings are more often clear with fog pooling in the valleys, and middays are warm. Showers still come, but they tend to be shorter. We find this the best balance of cool air, green scenery and thin crowds.

Late October: a first chill and the first wild sunflowers

According to Kenh14 (October 23, 2022, in Vietnamese), the last three months of the year are when Da Lat winds down its rainy season, with fog every early morning and evening and some nights dropping to about 14°C (57°F). Tuoi Tre News (October 25, 2018) describes the period from late October to March as the season of “wintry sunshine.” Late October is also when the first wild sunflowers open.

When the rain falls, and how hard#

For travelers, the timing of the rain matters more than the monthly total. According to VnExpress (August 14, 2025), citing Vietnam’s hydro-meteorological forecasting center, rainy-season thunderstorms in Da Lat most often hit between 2pm and 6pm, can last one to two hours and may bring strong winds. That article describes August, but the same afternoon pattern is common in October, just less frequent.

A Da Lat resident told Thanh Nien (July 2, 2023, in Vietnamese) that from June to October the city usually gets rain in the afternoon and evening, each spell lasting around an hour. The same article names the streets most prone to flooding in heavy rain: Phan Dinh Phung, Tran Quoc Toan, Bui Thi Xuan and the area along Cam Ly stream.

Late-season downpours can still flood streets

End-of-season rain is not always gentle. Dan Tri (in Vietnamese) reported that around 6pm on November 1, 2024, a heavy downpour left Phan Dinh Phung Street under 0.3-0.5 m (1-1.6 ft) of water, cutting traffic for about an hour before it drained. Heavy bursts like that are part of Da Lat weather in October too, especially in low-lying streets. For a sense of scale, VnExpress International reported that on June 24, 2023, the Da Lat station recorded 60 mm of rain between noon and 1:30pm. When heavy rain is forecast, the provincial authorities issue flash flood and landslide warnings that name Da Lat specifically, as Viet Nam News reported in August 2024; take them seriously.

Fog and cloud hunting: the upside of Da Lat weather in October#

With humidity around 88.6% and nights near 15°C (59°F), October mornings are often foggy. In town you will see thin mist over Xuan Huong Lake and the greenhouse valleys. To see a proper sea of clouds, VnExpress (September 3, 2022, in Vietnamese) says you need to head to higher hills outside the city, such as Cau Dat, Da Phu or Du Sinh, and set off at 4-5am, before sunrise.

Vietnamese travelers call this săn mây, or cloud hunting. As Saigoneer (March 16, 2023) explains, a proper outing starts with a 4-5am wake-up and a ride to the viewpoint, and whether the clouds show up is widely treated as a matter of luck. CafeF (July 20, 2023, in Vietnamese) puts the best window at 5:30-6:30am and repeats a popular saying that a wet afternoon means a cloudy next morning. That is folk wisdom, not a rule.

For Da Lat weather in October, we rate the odds of seeing clouds as fair to good: humidity is still high and the winds of December have not arrived. The downside is that after a wet night the dirt roads up the hills are slippery and dark. What blooms and ripens in October#

Wild sunflowers: from late October

Wild sunflowers (dã quỳ in Vietnamese, Tithonia diversifolia) are a big reason people visit at the end of the year. According to VnExpress (August 16, 2022, in Vietnamese), the bloom runs from October into November, as the last rains thin out. The thickest patches are usually around the old Cam Ly airfield and along the Trai Mat - Cau Dat road; in town you will find sparser clumps near Da Lat University and at the end of Phan Dinh Phung Street.

So Da Lat weather in October only opens the flower season. If you come early in the month, do not expect golden hillsides. The flowers fill in as the rain eases, so the scenery starts to look good from late October and usually peaks in November. Timing shifts from year to year; 2026 is forecast to have an early end to the rainy season (see the outlook below), but no source we found says the flowers will bloom early.

Pink grass: not yet

Many online posts lump wild sunflowers and the famous pink grass hills together under October, but VnExpress says the pink grass usually appears only from late November into December, so Da Lat weather in October is simply too early for it. If you want both in your photos, aim for late November.

Persimmons and dried persimmons

Persimmons line up better. VnExpress notes that the trees start fruiting around August and the season lasts through November into early December. In October, orchards are heavy with fruit and many families begin making hong treo gio, the wind-dried persimmons sold as gifts. Da Lat weather in October 2026: the seasonal outlook#

No agency has published a city-level forecast for Da Lat for October 2026, so we rely on regional outlooks. Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, as reported by Cong Dan & Khuyen Hoc (September 23, 2026, in Vietnamese), expects average temperatures nationwide from September 21 to October 20, 2026 to run 0.5-1.5°C above the long-term average. The Central Highlands and the south are expected to see many days of showers and thunderstorms, with some moderate to heavy rain.

The same outlook expects fewer storms and tropical depressions than usual (the long-term average for the period is 2.2 in the East Sea and 1.0 making landfall), while warning that thunderstorms can still bring tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts.

El Niño and an early end to the rains

According to VietNamNet Global (August 20, 2026), the forecasting center expects a strong to very strong El Niño through the end of 2026. Moderate to heavy rain may continue through October before falling off quickly from November, and Lam Dong province, which includes Da Lat, is among the places expected to run warmest above normal between September and November. Tuoi Tre (August 15, 2026, in Vietnamese) adds that the Central Highlands’ rainy season may end early.

In travel terms: Da Lat weather in October 2026 may be slightly warmer than average, nights a little less chilly, and the late part of the month could dry out sooner than usual. But early October is still the rainy season and thunderstorms can still be heavy. Mountain passes and getting there in October 2026#

Why is October riskier than other months? Because the hillsides have been soaking up water for months. According to Dan Tri (May 8, 2026, in Vietnamese), in late October 2025 prolonged heavy rain brought down a slope on D’Ran Pass near Cau Treo, dumping earth, rock and old pine trees onto the road and cutting traffic. On October 25, 2023, a jeep carrying tourists near Cu Lan Village was swept away by a flash flood, killing four visitors (VnExpress, in Vietnamese).

For October, our rules come down to three: cross passes in daylight and before 2pm, skip off-road jeep tours and stream crossings after a night of rain, and postpone if heavy rain is forecast for Lam Dong.

What to wear in Da Lat in October#

Da Lat weather in October swings from about 15°C to 23°C (59-73°F) in a day, with rain and high humidity on top, so layers are the easiest answer. The full packing checklist lives in the preparation section of our travel tips; below is simply how to dress by time of day this month.

One small tip: canvas sneakers and long skirts get soaked and muddy at the night market or on dirt paths after rain. We prefer waterproof trainers and quick-dry pants. If you plan a photo shoot in a dress on the hills, bring a pair of sandals to change into between locations.

Rainy-day and sunny-day plans#

Da Lat weather in October rarely gives you a fully perfect or fully washed-out day, so keep two lists and pick half-day by half-day.

When it rains

• Lam Dong Museum (4 Hung Vuong Street): archaeology, traditional crafts and festivals of the highlands, entirely indoors.
• Dinh I (Palace I): reopened with free gate entry from June 15, 2026 (SGGP, in Vietnamese); most of the visit is inside the villa.
• Da Lat Market indoor halls: local specialties, breakfast and shelter.
• A cafe with glass walls or a lake view: watching the rain with a drip coffee is a rainy-season ritual.
• Da Lat Railway Station: a historic building with covered platforms, close to the center.

When the sun is out

• Cau Dat tea hills and Trai Mat: misty at dawn, with wild sunflowers along the road late in the month.
• Xuan Huong Lake and Lam Vien Square: walk before 10am while mist still hangs over the water.
• Tuyen Lam Lake and Truc Lam Zen Monastery: best in the morning; do not linger into the afternoon showers.
• Datanla and Prenn waterfalls: at their fullest, but go only after at least half a day of dry weather.

Crowds and prices in October#

October has no national public holiday, unlike the September 2 holiday, when average hotel occupancy in Da Lat reached about 80% (Lam Dong Newspaper, August 28, 2026, in Vietnamese). We have not found sourced room rates for October 2026, so we do not quote any. Broadly, weekdays are quiet and weekends busier, but nothing like Lunar New Year.

The year-end peak starts later: the 11th Da Lat Flower Festival is scheduled to open on the evening of December 19, 2026 and close on December 31 (Thanh Nien, June 16, 2026, in Vietnamese). That makes October a lull before the busy season, good for slow travelers who like easy bookings and room to negotiate a motorbike rental.

A 3-day plan built around Da Lat weather in October#

Day 1: settle in slowly

• Morning: arrive, have breakfast at Da Lat Market, walk around Xuan Huong Lake while the mist lingers.
• Midday: rest, coffee near the lake.
• Afternoon (shower hours): Lam Dong Museum, then Dinh I if it is still dry.
• Evening: hot pot for dinner, then the night market if the rain has stopped.

Day 2: dawn mist in the east

• 4:30-7am: cloud hunting at Cau Dat or Da Phu hill, only if there was no heavy rain overnight.
• Late morning: the Trai Mat road and Linh Phuoc Pagoda; look for wild sunflowers late in the month.
• Afternoon: back in town before 2pm for a nap or a cafe with a view of the rain.
• Evening: early night.

Day 3: lakes and pine forest to the south

• Morning: Tuyen Lam Lake and Truc Lam Zen Monastery.
• Midday: buy dried persimmons, candied fruit and coffee to take home.
• Afternoon: leave Da Lat, crossing the pass before dark.

This plan assumes average Da Lat weather in October. If a day starts wet, switch straight to the rainy-day list above and move cloud hunting to the next morning. Do not force a hill climb in the rain: there will be no clouds to see, and the path will be slippery.

Is October a good time to visit Da Lat?#

Putting it all together, Da Lat weather in October has clear upsides and clear downsides. Here is our verdict.

If your dates are flexible, the best way to use Da Lat weather in October is to choose the second half of the month, travel midweek and keep the schedule light.
