Samten Hills Da Lat: the record prayer wheel, 2026 tickets and how to get there

Samten Hills Da Lat (in Vietnamese, Khu tham quan du lịch văn hóa tâm linh Samten Hills Da Lat) is a Vajrayana, or Tibetan-style, Buddhist complex spread across hilltops in Don Duong, east of Da Lat. Its centerpiece is a gold-plated bronze prayer wheel that Guinness World Records lists as the largest on Earth. The name says “Dalat,” but the site is well outside the city, and that is the first thing to plan around.

Our list of places to visit in Da Lat covers the pagodas inside town. Samten Hills needs its own half day, so this guide walks through where it is, who built it, what makes the stupa special, a suggested route, tickets, what to wear, photo etiquette and how to get there.

What is Samten Hills Da Lat, and where is it?#

According to the operator, Samten Hills Da Lat stretches over three hills in Don Duong and takes its architectural cues from the Buddhist lands around the Himalayas. VietNamNet (March 26, 2023) puts the whole project at 220 hectares. CafeF (in Vietnamese) (May 10, 2023) says only about 6 hectares are given over to the spiritual tourism area; the rest is hills, gardens and lodging.

The heart of the site is a Vajrayana Buddhist cultural space called Drigung Kagyu Samten Ling. The official site says it was created under the guidance of Drubwang Sonam Jorfel Rinpoche, a senior monk from Ladakh in northern India, with artisans from India and Nepal. Drigung Kagyu is one of the lineages of Tibetan Buddhism.

The new address after the 2025 merger

The official site and most articles still say “Kambute hamlet, Tu Tra commune, Don Duong district.” Vietnam abolished district level government on July 1, 2025. Under Resolution 1671/NQ-UBTVQH15, published in full on a government portal (in Vietnamese) on June 20, 2025, Thanh My town, Da Ron commune and Tu Tra commune were merged into a new commune called Don Duong. The current address is therefore Kambute hamlet, Don Duong commune, Lam Dong province. For a driver, just type “Samten Hills Da Lat” into Google Maps or Grab.

How far is it from Da Lat?

Sources disagree. Tuoi Tre News (2024) says about 35 km, VietNamNet (2023) and Thanh Nien (December 30, 2025) say about 40 km, and one guide on the official site says 44 km. Most of the difference comes from where you start. The operator also says the site is about 15 km from Lien Khuong Airport, which makes it easy to fit in on a flight day.

Who built Samten Hills, and the 2023 legal debate#

The developer is Kim Phat Production and Trading Co., Ltd. CafeF (in Vietnamese) (May 10, 2023) reported that the company was founded in Ho Chi Minh City in 2004, has charter capital of VND80 billion, and is 96.325% owned by businesswoman Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong. The site opened on March 7, 2023. According to VietnamPlus (March 7, 2023), the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations presented a certificate naming it a spiritual and cultural space for Vajrayana Buddhism that day.

A small but useful correction: many travel sites say Samten Hills is “recognized by UNESCO.” The certificate came from the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations, a domestic civil society group, not from UNESCO itself.

A tourist site, not a temple, on paper

Right after opening, the site went viral on Vietnamese social media as the “Tibetan pagoda” or “Indian pagoda.” On March 31, 2023, SGGP reported that the Ministry of Home Affairs had asked Lam Dong to clarify activities there, and that a central inspection team would report to the Prime Minister. The province said the site was “not recognized as a religious establishment” but as an eco-tourism site combined with spiritual culture.

Tien Phong (in Vietnamese) (April 17, 2023) quoted the provincial environment department: the project was approved for forestry, dairy farming and a milk plant combined with cultural tourism, and the land may not be used for religious purposes. Phap Luat TP.HCM (in Vietnamese) (April 25, 2023) reported that two structures had been fined VND40 million for building without permits. We have not found a published final conclusion from the central inspection.

For visitors, the practical meaning is simple: you buy a ticket to a tourist attraction, but the statues and the stupa are sacred to Vajrayana Buddhists. Behave as you would in any temple.

The Great Prayer Wheel and its Guinness record#

The star of Samten Hills Da Lat is a structure named Drigung Kagyu Rinchen Khorchen Khorwe Go Gek, usually called the Great Prayer Wheel Stupa. The Guinness World Records entry is titled “Largest prayer wheel”: 37.22 m (122 ft) tall and 16.53 m (54 ft) in diameter, verified on December 11, 2022, in Don Duong.

Note the wording. Guinness recognizes the largest prayer wheel, not the “world’s largest stupa” that some websites claim. The whole stupa is one enormous wheel that turns on its axis.

The figures you will hear

Sponsored coverage in VnExpress (in Vietnamese) (March 15, 2023) and a promotional piece in Tuoi Tre (in Vietnamese) (March 16, 2023) describe it as pure bronze plated with 24-karat gold, weighing 200 tonnes and made by craftspeople from India and Nepal. Inside, they say, are more than one billion Om Mani Padme Hum mantras printed on silk paper, along with relics.

The official site adds that a Kadam-style stupa sits on top, beneath a ceremonial parasol 17.53 m across. These figures come from the developer; apart from height and diameter, we have not seen them independently verified. Even so, the scale alone explains why the wheel has become the symbol of Samten Hills Da Lat: it is roughly as tall as a 12-story building.

Turning the wheel and walking the kora

The operator’s visitor guide (February 5, 2024) invites guests to place their hands on the stupa to turn the wheel, to walk the kora (a devotional circuit) clockwise around it, and to offer a khata, the white or colored silk scarf used in Tibetan Buddhism. Walking clockwise is the rule at Tibetan Buddhist sites everywhere; going against the flow is considered disrespectful.

The main areas of Samten Hills Da Lat and a suggested route#

The official site map (February 2024) divides Samten Hills Da Lat into several zones. Most visitors follow the order below, with an on-site bus or electric buggy covering most of the distance.

1. Welcome area

The Cloud Gate, reception buildings, ticket desk and a food court. After buying a ticket you board the shuttle to the Buddhist cultural area. The parking lot is open 24 hours.

2. Samten Ling Gate and rest stop

Himalayan-style pillars and the Samten Ling Gate mark the line between the service zone and the sacred space. Nearby, the Samten Ling Dharma Store sells Buddhist items, has a small cafe and doubles as a shuttle stop.

3. The Vajrayana Buddhist cultural area

This is the main event. It includes:

• The Great Prayer Wheel Stupa, which the operator describes as the first stop, looking out over the Don Duong valley.
• A Maitreya Buddha statue, bronze and 10.5 m tall, facing east, so it catches the sunrise.
• An Amitayus (Buddha of Long Life) statue, also 10.5 m, beside the stupa.
• The Vajrayana heritage exhibition hall, displaying handmade artworks by Nepali and Indian artisans; visitors often walk the kora around it.
• A butter lamp house, the OM meditation garden and the Samten Hills vegetarian restaurant.

4. Joy Hill

Home to the Chiec La (Leaf) Cafe. According to the operator, it looks back at the stupa and across the valley, facing a line of prayer flags where visitors can hang their own.

Our suggested half-day plan

• Arrive early (6-8am): head straight to the cultural area, see the Maitreya statue in morning light and turn the wheel before the crowds.
• The next hour or so: walk the kora around the stupa and the exhibition hall, then look inside.
• Mid-morning: a snack at the vegetarian restaurant or coffee on Joy Hill, then the shuttle back to the gate.

These timings are our estimate, not official figures. The operator’s own shuttle leaves town at 8am and returns at 1pm, so it allows about five hours for travel plus the visit.

Samten Hills Da Lat tickets and opening hours for 2026#

The prices below are for the “one-day sightseeing experience” listed in a notice on the official site dated March 26, 2026, valid until further notice. The ticket includes the on-site shuttle and a small gift. We show the older prices for comparison:

Buy tickets at the welcome area or on the official booking site, ticket.samtenhills.vn. The operator also sells packages with meals, camping and overnight stays; we leave those out because prices change by season.

Opening hours by area

• Ticket desk: 6am-6pm; no new entries after 6pm.
• Vajrayana Buddhist cultural area: 6am-8pm.
• Heritage exhibition hall: 6am-7pm.
• Vegetarian restaurant: 6am-9pm; Chiec La Cafe: 6am-8pm.
• On-site shuttle: 6am-8pm; rest area: 6am-3pm.

Everything is open seven days a week. Around Tet (Lunar New Year) and public holidays, ask your hotel to call the hotline first, since the site sometimes hosts events.

What to wear and how to behave at a sacred site#

We could not find a published dress code on the official site of Samten Hills Da Lat (checked September 27, 2026). Several travel blogs say modest clothing is required. Rule or not, dress as you would for a temple:

• Pants or skirts below the knee and tops with sleeves; skip tight, sheer or off-the-shoulder clothing.
• Flat, comfortable shoes; the site is spread over sloping hills.
• A light jacket: early mornings on the hilltops are windy and cool, middays are sunny.

The usual etiquette at Tibetan Buddhist sites applies here too:

• Walk the kora and turn prayer wheels clockwise.
• Do not climb or sit on statue bases or the stupa, and do not touch Buddha statues.
• Keep your voice down and your phone speaker off, especially in the exhibition hall.
• Take off your shoes indoors if a sign asks you to.
• Do not point your feet at a statue when sitting, and avoid joke poses in front of it.

If you have been to Truc Lam Zen Monastery, the spirit is the same. The difference is that Truc Lam is a working Vietnamese Zen monastery, while Samten Hills presents Tibetan-style Buddhism, with its own colors, ritual objects and practices.

Photography and drones#

The operator actively encourages photos with the Guinness plaque and the stupa rising out of the clouds. We found no published ban on photography inside the exhibition hall; if you see a no-photo sign or staff ask you to stop, follow it.

• Ask before taking close-ups of monks, nuns or people praying.
• No flash aimed directly at statues or paintings indoors.
• Do not block the kora path for a shot; people walking the circuit should not have to stop.

Drones: Samten Hills Da Lat is only about 15 km from Lien Khuong Airport, and flying near the airport is banned with heavy fines. See the rules section of our Da Lat travel tips. If you want to fly on site, ask the operator and get the required permit first.

Best time to visit and the weather#

Early morning is the best time of day. The Maitreya statue faces east, and the operator says the site sits at about 1,000 m, so on dry mornings you may see a sea of clouds around the stupa. Late afternoon light on the gold is lovely too, and the cultural area stays open until 8pm.

Don Duong is lower than central Da Lat. A 2024 Tuoi Tre article (in Vietnamese), quoted on the official site, describes the area as having Da Lat’s cool air but longer hours of sunshine. Most of the route is outdoors and exposed, so bring a hat and sunscreen even on a cool day.

By season

• October: still the rainy season, with rain usually in the afternoon. Go early and check the forecast, as explained in our guide to Da Lat weather in October.

• December to April: dry season, blue skies and the best photos, but strong midday sun on open hillsides.

On crowds, a promotional piece in Thanh Nien (in Vietnamese) (December 30, 2025) says visitor numbers jump over holidays, Tet and long weekends, but the site is large enough to avoid the crush you get in central Da Lat. Weekdays are still quieter.

How to get to Samten Hills Da Lat from Da Lat and the airport#

By car, taxi or motorbike

From central Da Lat, head south down Prenn Pass (or the Lien Khuong-Prenn expressway) toward Lien Khuong Airport, then continue east toward Don Duong. The operator says the route is on Google Maps and mostly paved, but the last 1.5 km before the gate is bumpy, so take it slowly.

Prenn Pass currently has a landslide section: on September 22, 2026, Lam Dong declared an emergency there, and the road stays open with traffic control (Thanh Nien (in Vietnamese)). The official Samten Hills shuttle

According to the official booking site (checked September 27, 2026), the operator runs a round-trip bus:

• VND275,000 per person round trip, entry ticket not included; children under 2 sharing a seat ride free.
• Pickup: Samten Hills Boutique Villa, 11 Dong Da Street, Xuan Huong - Da Lat ward.
• Two departures a day: out at 8am, back at 1pm; out at 2:30pm, back at 7:30pm.
• Book before 4pm the day before; minimum two passengers per trip; non-refundable.

From Lien Khuong Airport

Lien Khuong Airport reopened on August 19, 2026, after runway repairs (Tuoi Tre News). Because Samten Hills Da Lat is only about 15 km away, you can visit straight from an early arrival before heading into the city, or on the way to a late departure. Plan for your luggage: we found no official information on bag storage at the site.

What to combine with Samten Hills#

Samten Hills sits off the usual Da Lat circuit but close to the main road south, which makes a few combinations easy:

• Flight day: Samten Hills in the morning and the airport at lunchtime, or land early, visit, then drive up to Da Lat.
• The Prenn Pass cluster: on the way back, stop at Datanla Waterfall for the alpine coaster, or ride the Da Lat cable car from Tuyen Lam Lake to Robin Hill.
• A spiritual day: Samten Hills in the morning, Truc Lam Zen Monastery in the afternoon; on another day, the mosaic Linh Phuoc Pagoda, which you can reach by train from Da Lat Railway Station.
• More handmade marvels: add the Da Lat clay tunnel beside Tuyen Lam Lake.

Do not squeeze Samten Hills into the same day as northern sights such as Langbiang or Van Thanh flower village. They lie in opposite directions, and you will spend the day in a car.

Pros and cons of Samten Hills Da Lat#

Final thoughts#

If you are curious about Tibetan Buddhist culture, enjoy monumental architecture and want a quiet half day away from the city, Samten Hills Da Lat is worth the trip. Go early, dress modestly, walk the kora clockwise, and remember that this is a sacred space for many people even if, legally, it is a tourist site. If you only have two days in Da Lat, the sights in town may be a better use of your time.
