Nha Trang in November and December: Is the Rainy Season Worth It?

Nha Trang in November or December 2026 works if you can keep your itinerary flexible. On long-term averages, November is the wettest month, with rain on about 18 days; December is drier but the sea is usually rougher, so island trips and dives are often called off. This season's outlook points to fewer storms than average, but no one can say in advance which days will be calm. Stay central near Tran Phu beach, leave spare days, and pick your island day from the marine forecast close to the trip.

Is Nha Trang worth visiting in November and December?

Yes, as long as you can live with some rain and your whole trip doesn’t hinge on getting out to the islands. Bay tours still run on calm days: in early December 2025, less than three weeks after major flooding, more than 2,700 people a day were joining Nha Trang Bay tours. What nobody can promise is which days will be calm.

  • Good fit: a hotel-and-pool break, seafood, mud baths and wandering the city; a Nha Trang plus Da Lat trip; four or more days, so there is room to move things around.
  • Poor fit: a trip built around scuba diving, a two- or three-day visit with an island tour on every day, or a plan to swim in the sea every day.

November or December? November is the wettest month of the year and the month when storms most often reach this stretch of coast. December gets about half the rain, but the northeast monsoon keeps building, so the sea gets rougher towards the end of the year. In practice:

  • If island trips matter most: keep your dates flexible and pick the boat day from the marine forecast close to the trip. Wave data from recent years suggests early November tends to have fewer rough days than the weeks after, but that is not enough to promise calm seas on your trip.
  • If you want less rain: December is worth considering. Lower average rainfall doesn’t rule out heavy rain in the half-month you travel, so still check heavy-rain warnings before you go and save the island trip for a day when the sea allows it.

December191 mm on about 14 days22-27°CWaves above 1 m on about four days in fiveAbout 26°C

The 1 m mark is only a way to compare months, not the point at which tours are cancelled. Split into half-months, the sea gets rougher as the season goes on: about 3 days in 10 see waves above 1 m in early November, about 6 in late November and nearly 9 in late December. Years differ a lot, too: in November 2022 only about 2 days in 10 had waves above 1 m, against about 5 in each of 2023-2025. The water stays warm enough to swim even in December; wind and waves are the problem, not temperature. From November to January the wind blows from the north to east on almost every day, straight onto the east-facing city beach.

That is what past years looked like. For this season, the national climate outlook of October 15, 2026 expects fewer storms and tropical depressions than average from November 2026 to January 2027, and December rainfall on the south-central coast 50-100 mm below average. Heavy rain spells are still possible. Looking at Vietnam’s weather in November and December as a whole, Nha Trang is the southern end of the wet coastal belt that starts at Hue, while the far south and Phu Quoc are already in the dry season.

Island trips and diving in November and December

Bay island tours

The standard tours to Hon Mun, Hon Tam, Hon Mot and Hon Mieu are sold all season. Light rain rarely stops a tour; strong wind and big waves do, even on a sunny day. If boats are ordered to stay in port, the tour is cancelled or moved to another date. Some operators will offer a route closer to shore instead; only take it if that route is still allowed to run and the operator confirms it is safe.

  • Pencil in the island day for day two or three of your stay so there is room to move it, then confirm it against the marine forecast. Avoid your last day or the day you fly out.
  • Before paying, ask whether a weather cancellation means a refund or only a new date, and what is left of the itinerary if the island changes.
  • The evening before, check the national forecast for Nha Trang (in Vietnamese) and any strong-wind warning for the sea. If there is one, don’t push for a small-boat trip.
  • Wear a life jacket for the whole trip, even if you swim well.

One change if you have read about island trips south of the city: since June 4, 2026, Khanh Hoa has told operators to stop all tours to Binh Ba island, Hon Chut (Binh Hung island) and Mui Hoi in Cam Ranh, because they sit inside the security zone of the naval port. Don’t book anyone still selling them.

Diving: not the best time

If scuba is the main reason for your trip, aim for roughly April to September, when the sea is at its calmest. November and December bring many rough days, the water tends to be murkier after heavy rain, and many dive centers run fewer trips. Snorkeling in shallow spots on an island tour is still possible on calm days.

The waters around Hon Mun, the bay’s best-known coral site, have been closed to swimming and diving since June 27, 2022 to let the reef recover. In May 2026 the Nha Trang Bay management board still described the swimming and diving suspension in Hon Mun’s strictly protected zone as a measure in force. Before you book, ask for the actual dive site and check that it is currently permitted. A tour called “Hon Mun” doesn’t mean you will dive inside the suspended area. Ask too whether you can move the date for free if the sea is rough.

Hon Tre island and the theme park

VinWonders on Hon Tre island doesn’t depend on tour boats because it has a cable car across the bay. Note that the cable car is closed for maintenance from October 26 to November 10, 2026; during that time visitors cross by speedboat, about 7-10 minutes. If the cable car stops for bad weather, check the day’s transfer arrangements with the operator; replacement boats also depend on sea conditions. If choppy boat rides put you off, go after November 10 on a calm day.

Swimming in November and December: check the flags first

The beach along Tran Phu Street faces east, straight into the northeast monsoon. On January 9, 2026, with waves of 3-6 m, lifeguards pulled seven people out along Tran Phu and Nguyen Chanh streets, most of them foreign visitors; October 2025 saw several similar rescues with waves of only about 2 m.

  • Swim only where lifeguards are on duty, and stay out when there is a warning flag or a no-swimming sign.
  • On big-wave days, use the pool. That is the main reason to book a hotel with one this time of year.
  • With children: when there is a rough-sea warning or a swimming ban, keep them away from the water’s edge. On days when swimming is allowed, stay in a lifeguarded area and keep them within arm’s reach.

What to do on rainy or rough-sea days

Mud baths. The two best-known are Thap Ba (on Ngo Den Street) and I-Resort (Vinh Ngoc), a few kilometers inland. Both are on the west side of the city near the Cai River, in Tay Nha Trang ward, the area hit hardest by the floods of November 16-22, 2025. An ordinary rainy day is fine; after prolonged heavy rain, call before you go. The mud bath on Hon Tam island needs a boat, so it depends on the sea like any island tour.

Po Nagar towers and Long Son Pagoda. Both are in the city and fit into half a day between showers. The steps up to the towers are stone, so wear shoes with grip when it’s wet.

Add a few days in Da Lat. Da Lat is about 145 km away over the Khanh Le Pass and is entering its dry season: rain on about 12 days in November and only about 6 in December. Two or three days there is an option if you want to see both places and the pass is open and safe. Don’t treat it as an automatic escape from bad weather in Nha Trang: the same heavy rain can bring landslides on the pass, as on the night of November 16, 2025, when one hit a bus and killed six people. Cars are still banned on the pass from 6 pm to 5 am, and as of October 22, 2026 traffic was also being held in batches while crews secure the rock face, so take a morning bus from Nha Trang to Da Lat. If it is raining hard or has just poured, hold off and check with the bus company about the pass before you set off.

Where to stay in the rainy season

Central Nha Trang along Tran Phu: easiest for a first visit

You can walk to restaurants, markets and massage places, and Po Nagar, Long Son Pagoda and the island-tour pier to the south are a short ride away. On a wet day there is plenty to do without going far. Pick a place with a pool, and ask for a sea view if you like watching the waves without getting in.

The north, around Hon Chong and Pham Van Dong Street: quieter

Less noise than the center and plenty of newer hotels. The beach also faces east, so the waves are much the same this time of year. There are fewer places to eat, so check which restaurants are within easy reach of your hotel, and budget for rides when you want to visit the center.

Bai Dai, near Cam Ranh airport: if you plan to stay put

Much closer to the airport than the city, which helps with late arrivals and early departures. The trade-off is a long drive into town, so on rainy days you will mostly stay inside the resort. Good for a pure resort break, less so if you want the city and island trips.

Hon Tre island and Ninh Van Bay: boat and cable car dependent

Resorts on the islands or on peninsulas reached only by water depend on the weather for getting in and out. Ask how transfers work when the sea is rough, and don’t spend your last night there if you have an early flight the next morning.

Avoid the low-lying west of the city

During the November 16-22, 2025 floods, water was more than 2 m deep in parts of Tay Nha Trang and Nam Nha Trang wards, the low-lying area downstream on the Cai River, including 23 Thang 10 Street and Vo Nguyen Giap Boulevard. If you book a homestay or apartment away from the beach, check the map and ask the host whether the street flooded in 2025.

Cam Ranh airport and getting around in the wet season

Cam Ranh airport is about 35 km from central Nha Trang, roughly 40-60 minutes by car. There is an airport bus, but sources give different times for the last one, so check the last departure and pickup point with the operator before you fly. If no suitable bus remains by the time you leave the terminal, arrange a transfer or take a taxi or Grab; in mid-2025, taxis cost about VND250,000-350,000 and Grab VND220,000-300,000 per trip.

  • Flights: when a storm hits, airports in its path can close for a few hours. Cam Ranh may stay open while a connection through another central Vietnam airport is delayed, so watch your airline’s updates for a few days before you fly.
  • Trains: floods can stop trains on parts of the line, as they did between Nha Trang and Dieu Tri in November 2025. If you go by rail, give your correct phone number when booking so you get schedule changes.

Storms and floods: when to change your plans

Between 1961 and 2017, November was the month with the most storms and tropical depressions making landfall on the Binh Dinh to Ninh Thuan coast; in December the number drops sharply. The most recent serious event was the rain and flooding of November 16-22, 2025, which killed 22 people in Khanh Hoa and left western Nha Trang under deep water; by early December, beaches, islands and the main sights were open again.

So book rooms and tickets you can change or cancel, and follow the forecast from two or three days before you travel. If there is a heavy-rain or storm warning or a road closure, reschedule as local authorities advise rather than sticking to your bookings, and follow any evacuation order straight away.

Quick checks before you book

  • Is there at least one free day to move an island tour, and is the tour well clear of your flight home?
  • What the tour or dive operator does when it cancels for weather: refund or new date.
  • Does your hotel have a pool, and is it outside the low-lying west of the city?
  • Your arrival time: for a late arrival, check the last airport bus and have a taxi or transfer as a backup.
  • Adding Da Lat: is the pass open, which bus, and will it clear the pass before 6 pm?
  • If what you really want is sunshine and a calm sea, Phu Quoc in December is already in its dry season, with rain on only about 6 days on average.

FAQ

Can you swim in the sea in Nha Trang in December?

The water is around 26°C, warm enough to swim. Whether you can depends on the waves that day: only go in where lifeguards are on duty and there is no warning flag. On rough days, use your hotel pool.

Do I get a refund if my island tour is cancelled for weather?

It depends on the operator: some refund in full, others only offer a new date or a closer island. Ask before you pay and keep the confirmation message.

How many days should I spend in Nha Trang in November or December?

Four days or more makes it easier to move an island tour, but you may still miss out if the sea stays rough for your whole stay. If you also want to see Da Lat, add two or three days and check the Khanh Le Pass before you go.

Does it rain all day in Nha Trang at this time of year?

Low-pressure systems or cold surges can bring rain that lasts several days, but many days only see passing showers. Check the hourly forecast the evening before and plan around it.
