Ha Long Bay cruise in winter: day trip or overnight, and which bay to choose
With one day from Hanoi, a route 2 day cruise covers Sung Sot cave, Ti Top island and Luon cave, and many include kayaking or a bamboo boat. Stay overnight for an evening and early morning on the bay. In winter, November and December usually get more sun than February and March, but the northeast monsoon can still delay or cancel sailings.

Day cruise or overnight cruise?
If you mainly want the bay’s best-known sights, a day cruise can cover them. The most common is route 2, with Sung Sot cave, Ti Top island and Luon cave, and many day cruises include kayaking or a bamboo boat ride into Luon cave. Stay overnight if you want an evening and early morning on the bay, or would rather not do the Hanoi round trip in one day. From Tuan Chau, you can visit Lan Ha on either a day trip or an overnight cruise; check where you board, whether a transfer boat is involved and which stops the tour actually visits. Either way, compare the actual stops on each itinerary before you book.
| Day cruise | One night | Two nights | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time on the water | 4-7 hours | 24 hours or less; many boats board around noon | About 48 hours |
| Typically includes | One route, most often route 2; kayaking or a bamboo boat on many tours | Day-cruise stops plus sunset, the evening and early morning on the bay | An extra full day, often farther areas or a floating village |
| Package price | Tours from Hanoi with transfers from about US$60 | About US$80-155 a night (Ha Long), US$115-235 (Lan Ha) | Varies widely by boat; ask for a quote |
| Winter note | You get back to Hanoi after dark | Cold, windy deck in the evening | The second day may be grey |
A second night is worth considering if the extra day includes stops you want, such as farther areas, a floating village or Lan Ha, or if you simply enjoy slow days on board, grey skies or not. If two packages visit much the same stops, one night is usually the better value.
For a sunset on the water, compare the tour’s departure and return times with sunset: around 5:10-5:30 pm from November to January, close to 6 pm by mid-March. From November 1 to March 31, sightseeing boats must be back in port by 7 pm, and overnight boats must reach their mooring by 6:30 pm.
Ha Long, Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long?
- First visit, one day only: Ha Long Bay route 2, from Tuan Chau port or the Ha Long International Cruise Port at Bai Chay.
- Avoiding the busiest stops: Ha Long Bay route 3 or 4 (day and overnight boats), or a Lan Ha trip from Tuan Chau (day and overnight).
- Already staying on Cat Ba: a Lan Ha day boat from Cai Beo pier.
- Keen on fishing villages and fish farms: Bai Tu Long.
Ha Long Bay
Most boats leave from Tuan Chau (Tuần Châu) port, about 12 km from the city centre, or from the international cruise port at Bai Chay (Bãi Cháy), which has fewer boats. Every boat is licensed for one numbered route, and only routes 2, 3 and 4 allow overnight stays:
- Route 1: Thien Cung and Dau Go caves, Dog Rock, Incense Burner islet, Fighting Cocks islet.
- Route 2: Sung Sot (Surprise) cave, Ti Top island (a small beach and a viewpoint path), Luon cave (entered by bamboo boat or kayak), Me Cung cave and Dong Tien lake. It packs in the best-known sights, so Sung Sot and Ti Top can get busy.
- Route 3: Cua Van floating culture centre, Tien Ong cave, Ba Ham lagoons.
- Route 4: Co cave, Thay cave, Vung Vieng (Vông Viêng) and Cong Do, in the southeast, bordering Bai Tu Long.

Lan Ha Bay (Cat Ba, Hai Phong)
Lan Ha lies off the southeast of Cat Ba island. It is the same seascape as Ha Long Bay but belongs to Hai Phong, and it has far fewer boats. There are two ways in:
- Stay on Cat Ba and take a boat from Cai Beo pier. Shared day tours cost about 200,000-350,000 VND (US$8-14) with lunch and kayaking (April 2026 prices); ask whether the bay fee is included. That price starts on Cat Ba and does not cover getting there from Hanoi, so it is not comparable with a Hanoi day tour.
- Cruise from Tuan Chau or the Ha Long port on one of the linked Ha Long to Lan Ha itineraries, running since April 20, 2026. Most of these are overnight, but some operators also sell a Lan Ha day trip back to Tuan Chau, so check where you board and whether there is a transfer.
Lan Ha is known for small beaches and clear water, but in winter the sea is no warmer than in Ha Long Bay. From November to March Cat Ba is quiet, which suits travelers after calm rather than beach time.

Bai Tu Long Bay
Bai Tu Long lies northeast of Ha Long Bay, toward Van Don, with the same limestone islands and plenty of fishing villages and floating fish farms. A boat sold as “Bai Tu Long” may run Ha Long Bay route 4 (around Vung Vieng and Cong Do) or leave from Ao Tien port in Van Don, so two cruises with the same label can differ in both the water they cover and the hours on the road. Ask which route the boat sails, which port it leaves from and how long the transfer takes.

Getting there: Hanoi, Cat Ba and the airports
- Hanoi to Ha Long: about 160 km (100 miles) by expressway, 2.5-3 hours. Cruise shuttles usually stop for 30 minutes on the way, so allow 3-3.5 hours; a private car takes about 2.5 hours. For a boat that boards around noon, leave Hanoi at about 8 am.
- Hanoi to Cat Ba: about 140 km. Take the Hanoi-Hai Phong expressway and the Tan Vu-Lach Huyen sea bridge, then cross to the island by the Dong Bai ferry (it replaced the old Got ferry; about 25 minutes) or the cable car. The cable car usually closes on Tuesdays and can change hours for maintenance, and the ferries keep their own timetable, so check the current schedule before you go. From the landing it is another 20 km or so to Cat Ba town. A ferry also links Tuan Chau with Gia Luan on Cat Ba, with only a few sailings a day.
- Airports: most international travelers fly into Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport, which is roughly as far from the bay as the city itself. From Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang, flying into Hai Phong (Cat Bi, about an hour’s drive from Tuan Chau) or Van Don (about 50 km from Ha Long) can save the drive; check which routes run on your dates.
If this is your first trip to Vietnam, check your visa or visa-free entry before you pay for the cruise.
Cruise package prices and bay fees
Package prices
Indicative prices; they vary by boat, cabin and date (USD at about 25,600 VND):
- Overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay: about 2-4 million VND (US$80-155) per person per night, according to a June 2026 guide. When comparing prices, check whether drinks are extra and whether the quote is per person or per cabin.
- Overnight cruise on Lan Ha Bay: about 3-6 million VND (US$115-235) per person per night.
- Day tours from Hanoi with transfers: from about US$60.
- Day-boat tickets can rise at weekends and on public holidays, by no more than 30%.
Before you pay, ask:
- Is the bay fee (table below) included?
- Are the Hanoi transfer, kayaking and the bamboo boat included or extra?
- How are drinks, taxes and weekend or holiday surcharges billed?
- Traveling solo? Many boats charge 70-80% of the full cabin price.
- Which route does the boat run, where does it moor overnight, and does it stop at Sung Sot and Ti Top?
- If the port keeps boats in because of the weather, do you get a new date or a refund, and how much?
Bay fees
These are paid to the bay authorities and are separate from the package price. Cruises usually include them; if you buy a day-boat ticket at the port yourself, check whether the fee is in the total.
| Ha Long Bay | Lan Ha Bay | |
|---|---|---|
| Day visit | Routes 1, 2: 250,000 VND (about US$10); routes 3, 4: 200,000 VND (US$8) | 120,000 VND (US$5) |
| One night | Route 2: 550,000 VND (US$21); routes 3, 4: 500,000 VND (US$20) | 400,000 VND (US$16) |
| Two nights | Route 2: 750,000 VND (US$29); routes 3, 4: 650,000 VND (US$25) | 600,000 VND (US$23) |
| Children | Free under 1.2 m or under 7; 20% off from 7 to under 16 | Free under 6; the child rate (60,000 VND a day, 300,000 VND a night) is set for children “aged 6 and over” with no upper age stated, so ask when you book |
Winter is not the cheap season: year-end is peak time for international visitors. For Christmas, New Year or Lunar New Year (Tet falls on February 6, 2027, and Vietnam’s public sector is off February 4-10), book early and choose a refundable rate.
Weather on the bay, November to March
November and December usually bring more sun and fewer rainy days than February and March. January and February get little rain in total but turn greyer; by February and March drizzle falls on many days, sunshine drops below two hours a day and the outer karsts often fade into haze.
| Month | Weather | Sea |
|---|---|---|
| Nov | 19-26°C (66-79°F), 6 rainy days, about 5 hours of sun a day | 25°C (77°F) |
| Dec | 15-22°C (59-72°F), 5 rainy days, 4 hours of sun, windiest month on average | 21°C (70°F) |
| Jan | 14-19°C (57-66°F), the coldest month, 8 rainy days | 19°C (66°F) |
| Feb | 15-20°C (59-68°F), 10 rainy days (7 with drizzle) | 19°C (66°F) |
| Mar | 18-22°C (64-72°F), 14 rainy days (10 with drizzle) | 22°C (72°F) |
Typhoons reach this coast mainly from June to September. From 1961 to 2017, November landfalls were rare and none were recorded from December to April. The winter risk is the northeast monsoon: each cold surge can bring strong wind and choppy water, and boats may then change their route or be held in port. This winter is forecast to be milder than usual, but as elsewhere in northern Vietnam in November and December, short cold snaps are still possible.
A 25°C sea in November is fine for a swim if you don’t mind cool water; from December most people find it too cold, though kayaks and bamboo boats still go out when the water is calm. For crisp views of the karsts, November and December are the better bet; late winter is moodier and can bring several grey days in a row.

Safety on the bay: what to check before you board
Before booking, ask for the boat’s name, its itinerary and the refund terms if it is not allowed to sail. Once aboard, listen to the safety briefing and find the life jackets and the exit nearest your cabin. Also:
- Buy tickets at the port’s ticket hall or from an operator with a clear name and address, never from touts outside the port.
- Ask for the registration number (QN-xxxx) and the licensed route.
- Wear a life jacket on tenders, kayaks and bamboo boats, even if nobody tells you to.
- If the port keeps boats in because of wind, fog or a storm warning, don’t go looking for a boat that is “still going”.
Why port holds matter: on July 19, 2025, the day boat Vinh Xanh 58 capsized in a sudden thunderstorm and 39 of the 49 people on board died; the storm warning came after it had left port. Winter has far fewer thunderstorms, but the northeast monsoon can still keep boats in port.
What to pack for a winter cruise
- A windproof or waterproof jacket plus a warm mid-layer. Nights from December to February average 14-15°C (57-59°F), Bai Chay has recorded 1.7°C (35°F) in December, and the deck adds wind chill.
- Shoes with grip: the paths in Sung Sot cave and the steps up Ti Top get slippery in damp weather.
- A waterproof phone pouch for kayaking.
- Swimwear, if your itinerary includes a swim stop and you are fine with cool water; also ask whether the boat’s pool or hot tub is in use in winter.
- Motion-sickness tablets if you get carsick, since the boat comes after 2.5-3 hours on the road.
FAQ
Do boats still run in fog or drizzle?
Usually, as long as the port clears them, though the views are softer and the itinerary may be shortened. In strong wind, thick fog or a storm warning, boats can be kept in port. Ask the seller in advance whether you would get a new date or a refund.
Is a hotel in Ha Long plus a day cruise better than sleeping on board?
It is usually cheaper and more flexible when the weather is unsettled, because you can pick the best day of your stay for the boat. What you give up is the evening and early morning out on the bay, which only overnight guests get.
How far ahead should I book?
Outside major holidays, you may find availability closer to departure, especially on day boats, though booking early gives you more choice of boats and cabins. For Christmas, New Year and Lunar New Year, book well ahead and choose a refundable rate, as these are peak dates for international visitors.
