Things to do in Mui Ne in the windy season, and how to get there
From about November to March, Mui Ne gets the northeast wind: dry, sunny and ideal for kitesurfing and the dunes, but the sea off many resorts is choppy and some beaches have eroded away. Buses from Ho Chi Minh City take about 4 to 5.5 hours; the train takes about 4 hours to Phan Thiet station, plus the ride on to your hotel. Phan Thiet has no commercial flights yet.

Choose your trip: kite lessons, the dunes or a resort stay
Around November the northeast wind settles over Mui Ne, and it usually blows until March or April. It barely rains and the sun is out most days, but the sea in front of many resorts is choppy, the wind throws sand around, and stretches of beach have been lost to erosion. What that means depends on why you are going:
- Learning to kitesurf or windsurf, or practicing either sport: this is the main season. See lesson prices and how long learning takes, then look for a place along Nguyen Dinh Chieu, close to the kite beach.
- The dunes, the fishing village and seafood: two or three days is enough. You can skip the kite section and go straight to the dunes and jeep trips; pack sunglasses and a buff, as the sand flies in this season.
- A resort stay: pick somewhere with a pool and ask about the beach in front (see where to stay). If you want calm swimming every day, or have small children who want to play on the sand right outside, this season may disappoint.
When booking a car or bus, send your hotel’s full address. Ham Tien and Mui Ne are now part of Mui Ne ward in Lam Dong province, but some tickets and maps still use the old Binh Thuan names.
Rain and wind by month
| Month | Rain | Wind |
|---|---|---|
| November | 55 mm (2.2 in), about 6-7 rainy days | Start of the season: the wind comes from the north to east on about 9 days in 10, but it is lighter than later months |
| December | 21 mm (0.8 in), about 3 days | Steadier northeasterly, building |
| January-February | Almost none | Usually the strongest, most consistent weeks of the year, February slightly more so |
| March | 5 mm, under 1 day | Still strong, easing towards the end of the month |
| April | 30 mm (1.2 in), about 3 days | End of the season: northeasterly on only about 6 days in 10, more patchy |
The table only shows which months tend to be windier, since model data does not fully capture conditions on the beach itself. Some weeks bring too little wind for lessons; others bring conditions that are too strong for beginners. If your trip is about kitesurfing, go by the forecast for the next few days and the school’s judgment when deciding on each lesson.
If you are coming from Ho Chi Minh City or Nha Trang, Mui Ne is the dry corner of the coast at this time of year, while Nha Trang in November and December is in its rainy season.
Kitesurfing and windsurfing: season, lesson prices, who it suits
Mui Ne is one of Asia’s best-known kitesurfing spots. The peak usually runs from mid-December to March. The wind builds from late morning and is strongest from midday to mid-afternoon, so many schools put beginners on the water in the lighter morning hours. The main kite beach runs along Ham Tien and Mui Ne, with schools set up on resort beaches. On a busy afternoon there can be several dozen kites out.
Lesson and rental prices
You can browse courses and ask about dates at C2SKY, Surfpoint or K1, three schools with IKO-certified instructors. The table lists each school’s own prices (checked October 26, 2026) so you can compare hours and what is included. Schools quote in euros or US dollars.
| School | 2-hour private taster | Private courses | Single hours, shared lessons |
|---|---|---|---|
| C2SKY | €100 | 12 hours over about 6 days: €660. 15 hours: €825. 18 hours: €950 | 1-hour refresher €60. Shared 9-hour course €743 for two |
| Surfpoint | $120 | 7 hours: $385. Independent course, 15 hours: $825 | Refresher $70 an hour, for riders who can already go out alone |
| K1 | €100 | 10 hours plus 2 hours’ rental: €500. 12 hours plus 3 hours’ rental: €600 | Private €55 an hour. Shared from €45 an hour per person |
Lesson prices include the kite, board, harness and buoyancy vest. K1 also includes a radio helmet and insurance on the teaching gear; Surfpoint includes gear insurance and an IKO card. Medical cover for you is usually not included, and many travel insurance policies exclude kitesurfing, so check your policy. To rent kit on your own, schools usually want IKO Level 3 or equivalent, meaning you can already ride independently; at C2SKY a full set is €38 an hour or €100 a day. You may see much lower prices offered elsewhere; ask exactly what is included before paying.
Who can learn, and how long it takes
- Time: getting your first rides and riding on your own are two different milestones. C2SKY says its 12-hour course, spread over about six days, is typically where students start to ride, and that independence usually comes at 15-18 hours. Surfpoint’s Independent course is 15 hours. It also depends on you and the wind, so when booking, ask what the package aims for, first rides or riding independently, and how many days you should plan to stay.
- Fitness: you must be able to swim and be comfortable in deep water. Mui Ne’s wind is strong and the sea has short, choppy waves, so the first days are more tiring than most people expect.
- Children: schools generally start at around 12 years old and roughly 40 kg (88 lb); check with the school, as limits vary.
- Windsurfing and wing foiling: both are taught too. A 2-hour wing foil taster costs about €140 or $150 and comes easier if you already kite or windsurf. For windsurfing lessons, ask the school for its current rates and what is included.

Questions to ask before you pay a deposit
- If there is too little or too much wind, is the lesson moved, refunded, or charged only for the hours taught?
- Is the instructor certified; how long is the land session; do you get a radio helmet in the water?
- Is there a boat or someone in the water to help if the kite drags you away from the beach?
- Is the teaching gear insured, and what happens if you damage or lose it?
The beach has marked swimming areas where kiting is not allowed. If you have children with you, keep them well away from where kites are launched and landed, as taut lines can cause injuries, and let them in the water only in the swimming area with an adult right beside them.
White dunes, red dunes and sunrise jeep trips
The white dunes at Bau Trang
Bau Trang is about 25 km (16 mi) from the fishing village and about 34 km from the middle of Ham Tien. It has wide white dunes and a lake at their foot. As of May 2025 the gate fee was 15,000 VND (about 60 US cents).
On May 25, 2025, a jeep rolled backwards into the lake and a tourist died, and the authorities suspended all off-road vehicles at Bau Trang. Jeep tours were recorded operating in December 2025. Before booking, ask separately whether vehicles on the Bau Trang dunes are currently allowed to run, because a tour that drives you between the sights is a different service. Past prices for vehicles on the dunes:
- Jeep: 800,000 VND (about $31) per trip for the whole vehicle, with no time limit; press reports say up to 6 people, one operator says up to 8.
- Self-drive quad bike (ATV): around 600,000-800,000 VND ($23-31) for 20 minutes. Before paying, ask for the current price, what the rules for drivers are, and whether you get a helmet and instruction; if you have not ridden one before, stay off the sand slopes. One operator also offers an ATV with a driver at 800,000 VND for two people.
Pick a vehicle with posted prices, wear the seatbelt and ask the driver to take it slowly. If there is no seatbelt or the driver will not quote a price first, do not get in.

Sunrise jeep trips
Sunrise trips usually pick you up at your hotel around 4:30 am, drive straight to Bau Trang, then stop at the red dunes, the fishing village and the Fairy Stream. Afternoon trips run the other way round, picking up around 1:30 pm and ending with sunset on the red dunes. In April 2026 a half-day jeep trip cost around 550,000-700,000 VND ($21-27) for a group of four, with 3-4 stops. When booking, ask:
- Is the price per jeep or per person, and does it include the Bau Trang gate fee? Vehicles on the dunes, if running, are usually extra.
- How long is each stop, and is hotel pickup and drop-off included?
- Cloud can hide the sunrise; does the trip still go, or can you change the date?
In the windy season, sand on the dunes stings your face and gets into cameras and phones. Bring sunglasses, a scarf or buff, and a sealed bag for your gear. On an afternoon trip, avoid the dunes in the middle of the day, when the sand is hottest.
Red dunes and the Fairy Stream
The red dunes sit right by road 706B, a few kilometers past the fishing village towards Hon Rom, so they are easy to reach on your own by taxi or scooter. Vendors at the bottom rent sliding mats, around 10,000-20,000 VND each in 2024; agree the price before you take one. The Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien) is a shallow stream running between red and white sand cliffs, and you walk it barefoot.

The fishing village and what to eat
The fishing village lines Huynh Thuc Khang street, about 1 km of beach with hundreds of boats and round basket boats moored in the bay. The beach fish market is busiest from about 4 to 7 am, when the boats come in.
If you buy seafood at the market and have a restaurant cook it, ask the price per kilo, watch it being weighed before it is taken away, and agree the cooking fee. In 2024, a seafood dinner at the restaurants along Huynh Thuc Khang and Nguyen Dinh Chieu cost about 300,000-500,000 VND ($12-19) per person.

Beyond seafood, a few local dishes worth trying:
- Banh can: small rice-flour cakes cooked in clay molds; here they come with a dipping sauce made from braised fish.
- Banh hoi long heo: fine woven rice noodles with pork offal, often served with rice porridge.
- Goi ca mai: a small silver fish cured in lime and tossed with toasted rice powder, rolled in rice paper with herbs.
- Mi Quang Phan Thiet: round noodles in a red broth, quite unlike the Quang Nam original.
Getting from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne
| Option | Time | Fare (checked Oct 25, 2026) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus or limousine van | About 4-5.5 hours, depending on stops | 160,000-660,000 VND ($6-26) | Check whether it drops in Mui Ne or only in Phan Thiet |
| SPT train, Saigon to Phan Thiet | About 4 hours, plus the transfer from Phan Thiet station | About 170,000-350,000 VND ($7-14) by class, based on 2024-2026 figures | Times change by season |
| Private car on the expressway | About 2.5-3 hours with clear roads | Ask for an all-in quote | The HCMC to Long Thanh section is being widened |
Bus
Booking sites list more than 30 companies on the Ho Chi Minh City to Phan Thiet route, running almost around the clock, from about 160,000 VND for a sleeper bus to 660,000 VND for a small limousine van. Some drop off along Nguyen Dinh Chieu street or at your resort; others stop only in Phan Thiet, so check the drop-off point when booking. For example, The Sinh Tourist runs morning, afternoon and evening buses, listed at 5 to 5.5 hours; the 2 pm departure costs 249,000 VND (about $10).
Train
The SPT train runs directly from Saigon to Phan Thiet in about 4 hours. The summer 2026 timetable had it leaving Saigon at 6:45 am and Phan Thiet at 1:30 pm; for times from October, check dsvn.vn, the Vietnam Railways booking site. From Phan Thiet station to the middle of Ham Tien is about 16 km by taxi or Grab. The main north-south Reunification Express trains do not call at Phan Thiet station but at Binh Thuan station (Muong Man), about 13 km from central Phan Thiet, which leaves a longer ride to Mui Ne.

Private car
From central Ho Chi Minh City, the route follows the HCMC - Long Thanh - Dau Giay and Dau Giay - Phan Thiet expressways, about 180-200 km to Ham Tien depending on where you start. The HCMC to Long Thanh section is being widened, with the main work due to finish at the end of 2026, so expect slow traffic at rush hour. When booking a car, ask whether the price is one way or return, what size car you get, whether expressway tolls are included, and the waiting charge if you are doing a day trip.
Flying
Phan Thiet airport’s civil terminal is still under construction, with opening targeted for 2027, so there are no commercial flights yet. International travelers fly into Ho Chi Minh City and continue by road. Long Thanh International Airport is scheduled to start commercial operations in December 2026. Whichever flight you book, check the arrival airport and landing time on the ticket and plan the drive from there; Long Thanh is about 30 km closer to Mui Ne than Tan Son Nhat (SGN). Mui Ne is also about 190 km by road from Cam Ranh airport (Nha Trang), roughly 3.5-4 hours on the expressway. Before you book, check Vietnam’s visa and entry rules for your passport.
Where to stay: Ham Tien and Mui Ne, the fishing village, or Phan Thiet
Along Nguyen Dinh Chieu (Ham Tien to Mui Ne)
The strip of resorts and hotels along the beach, and home to most of the kite schools. Best if you are learning to kite or want to walk to restaurants and the kite beach. It is also the stretch hit hardest by erosion (see the note below), so the beach varies a lot from one property to the next.
Around the fishing village, Huynh Thuc Khang street
More guesthouses and homestays at lower prices, close to the early fish market and the red dunes. It is about 8 km from the main kite beach, which suits you if you are not kiting or only going a few times.
Phan Thiet city
Guesthouses in the city run about 150,000-300,000 VND ($6-12) a night, close to the train station and local food. The catch is that you are 13-16 km from the middle of Ham Tien and need a ride every day.
Erosion and winter waves: ask before you book
For Christmas, New Year or Lunar New Year, compare room prices for your exact dates and favor rates with cancellation terms that suit you.
Swimming in the windy season
During the northeast monsoon the sea off Ham Tien often has waves and rip currents. In late November 2025 a tourist drowned off a Ham Tien resort beach even though the sea looked calm. Swim only where there are lifeguards, stay out when warning flags or no-swimming signs are up, and do not swim after drinking. On rough days, use the pool; let children in the sea only when swimming is allowed and an adult is right beside them.
Quick checks before you go
- Kitesurfing: ask the school what the package aims for and how many days to stay, ask about no-wind days, and check that your insurance covers kitesurfing.
- Bus: does it drop in Mui Ne or only in Phan Thiet? Train: check the timetable for your date on dsvn.vn and allow for the ride on from the station.
- Hotel: is there sand in front at high tide, is there a pool, and how far is the kite beach?
- Jeep trip: price per jeep or per person, gate fee included or not; whether vehicles on the Bau Trang dunes are currently running and what they cost; seatbelts.
- Pack sunglasses, a buff and a sealed camera bag for the dunes.
FAQ
Is there enough wind for kitesurfing in Mui Ne in November?
Usually, but November is the start of the season and some days are too light. Lighter wind can actually suit beginners. Check the wind forecast a few days out and ask the school what happens on no-wind days.
How many days do you need in Mui Ne?
Two or three days cover the dunes, the fishing village and a few seafood dinners. For kitesurfing it depends on your goal: at C2SKY a 12-hour course runs over about six days and usually gets you to your first rides, while riding independently tends to take around 15-18 hours. Ask the school what your package aims for and how many days to stay, and leave spare days for when the wind does not cooperate.
Can you do Mui Ne as a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City or Nha Trang?
You can, but it means a lot of time in a car: Ho Chi Minh City is about 180-200 km away and Nha Trang about 230 km. To see sunrise at the white dunes, stay at least one night in Mui Ne.
