Things to do in Phu Quoc: stay in the right area and spend less time on the road
For your first trip to Phu Quoc, staying in Duong Dong or the northern end of Long Beach makes it easier to explore both sides of the island. Choose North Phu Quoc or South Phu Quoc as your base only when most of your activities are concentrated there. Otherwise, long taxi rides can take up a surprising amount of your holiday.
By Da Lat LoversPublished Updated
Phu Quoc is roughly 50 km long from north to south. Traveling from VinWonders in the north to the Hon Thom cable car station in the south means crossing much of the island, which is far from a quick ride between neighboring attractions. For your first visit, allow at least 3 days and 2 nights, stay in Duong Dong, and focus on one major part of the island each day.
The first thing to decide is whether you want to spend your holiday swimming, relaxing at a resort, or visiting theme parks. Those three priorities lead to very different choices of accommodation and daily itineraries.
What is there to do in Phu Quoc?
Phu Quoc sits in the Gulf of Thailand. It has an international airport, beaches on different sides of the island, and several distinct tourism areas. Most visitors fall into two groups: those who want to spend most of their holiday at a beachfront resort and those who prefer to go out exploring every day.
One important difference between Phu Quoc and many other Vietnamese beach destinations is the distance between attractions. In Nha Trang, for example, you can walk along Tran Phu Street, stop at a restaurant, and return to your hotel without much trouble. In Phu Quoc, getting from a hotel in the north to Sao Beach or An Thoi can take nearly an hour by car, sometimes longer.
Here are the main areas worth considering.
| Area | Main attractions | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Duong Dong | Dinh Cau Temple, night market, local restaurants | First-time visitors, food lovers |
| Long Beach | West-facing beach, sunset views | Couples, beach holidays |
| Ong Lang | Quieter beaches and resorts | Relaxed holidays |
| North Phu Quoc | VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari, Grand World | Families, groups |
| South Phu Quoc | Sao Beach, Hon Thom, Sunset Town | Beach lovers, photography |
| An Thoi Islands | Boat trips, island hopping, snorkeling | Travelers who enjoy water activities |
You do not need to visit all these places. On a 3-day, 2-night trip, one day in North or South Phu Quoc, another exploring Duong Dong, and some time at the beach already make a reasonable itinerary.
Loading map...
- Duong Dong (Bach Dang Street): easiest base for a first trip
- Phu Quoc Night Market: Bach Dang Street, lively from around 5 PM
- Dinh Cau Temple: rocky outcrop near the Duong Dong River mouth
- Sao Beach: southeastern side, arrive around 8-10 AM
- Sunset Town (Kiss Bridge): colorful buildings, best in the late afternoon
- Hon Thom cable car station: departure station in Sunset Town
- VinWonders Phu Quoc: in the north, give it a full day
- Vinpearl Safari: near Bai Dai, opens at 9:00 AM
- Grand World: better in the afternoon and evening
- Phu Quoc International Airport: code PQC, around 20-30 minutes to Duong Dong
- Bai Vong Port: eastern side, where high-speed ferries commonly arrive
Who is Phu Quoc best for?
Families with young children often enjoy Vinpearl Safari, the aquarium at VinWonders, the Hon Thom water park, and hotels with swimming pools. Couples can choose Long Beach, Ong Lang, or Khem Beach, spending their afternoons by the water and evenings watching the sunset over dinner.
Solo travelers who enjoy local restaurants and do not want to hire a car every day should consider Duong Dong. It has more restaurants, convenience stores, and everyday services than many of the island's isolated resort areas.
On the other hand, travelers with only a short holiday who want museums, historical neighborhoods, traditional markets, and cultural attractions may find Phu Quoc less convenient. The island is primarily a destination for beaches, resorts, outdoor activities, and entertainment rather than urban sightseeing.
Where to stay in Phu Quoc: Duong Dong, north, or south?
Choose the area before choosing the hotel. A beautiful hotel located far from everything you plan to do can turn into an expensive taxi routine.
Duong Dong and northern Long Beach: best for first-time visitors
Western side, plenty of restaurants and hotels

Duong Dong is on the western side of the island. It is one of the main centers for restaurants, hotels, shopping, and evening activities. The area includes Phu Quoc Night Market, Dinh Cau Temple, and familiar streets such as Bach Dang, Tran Hung Dao, and 30 Thang 4.
Staying along Tran Hung Dao Street near the town center makes it easier to find restaurants, rent a motorbike, or call a taxi. Hotels worth looking at include Seashells Phu Quoc Hotel & Spa, near the center, and Lahana Resort Phu Quoc, on the hillside above the surrounding streets.
There is one geographical detail worth understanding: Long Beach, also known as Bai Truong, covers a considerable stretch of coastline. The northern part near Duong Dong is close to restaurants and local services. Resorts farther south toward Duong To are better suited to travelers who want to stay near the beach. A hotel with Long Beach in its address can be well beyond walking distance of the night market.
Stay here if you:
- Are visiting Phu Quoc for the first time.
- Have three or four days and want to explore both north and south.
- Prefer eating outside your hotel in the evenings.
- Do not plan to hire a private driver throughout your holiday.
The downside is that the town center is not as peaceful as a remote beachfront resort. Some sections of the coast also have hotels and construction projects close to the shore. Before booking, check whether the hotel has direct beach access or whether you need to walk to a public entrance.
North Phu Quoc: stay near VinWonders, Safari, and Grand World
Bai Dai and Ganh Dau, large resorts
North Phu Quoc, especially the Bai Dai and Ganh Dau areas, contains several large resorts and the Phu Quoc United Center entertainment complex. This is where you will find VinWonders Phu Quoc, Vinpearl Safari, and Grand World. Hotels such as Vinpearl Resort & Spa Phu Quoc and Crowne Plaza Phu Quoc Starbay suit families planning to spend most of the holiday within the northern resort and entertainment area.
The biggest advantage is how close you are when visiting VinWonders and Safari. You can spend one day at the safari park, another at the theme park, and visit Grand World in the evening without repeatedly crossing the island.
North Phu Quoc makes a poor base for daily visits to An Thoi, Sao Beach, or Duong Dong Night Market, though. Depending on where you start, driving from the north to southern attractions can take around an hour or more. With two days planned for exploring Hon Thom and the southern beaches, moving your accommodation south may make more sense than keeping a room in Ganh Dau.
South Phu Quoc: convenient for Hon Thom, Sao Beach, and Sunset Town
An Thoi, Sunset Town, Khem Beach

South Phu Quoc includes An Thoi, Sunset Town, Khem Beach, and the surrounding areas. Sunset Town has colorful Mediterranean-inspired buildings, a clock tower, Kiss Bridge, the Hon Thom cable car station, and evening entertainment. It suits travelers who enjoy photography, late-afternoon sightseeing, and organized shows.
Khem Beach, meanwhile, is more focused on beachfront relaxation. Premier Residences Phu Quoc Emerald Bay and JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay are two well-known hotels that can help you locate this part of the island when browsing accommodation.
The main disadvantage of staying in the south is the distance to Duong Dong. Going to the night market or eating at local restaurants around the town center requires a fairly long journey. Some streets in Sunset Town are also designed primarily for tourism rather than everyday local life.
Choose South Phu Quoc for a 3-day, 2-night trip if you already know that VinWonders and Safari are not priorities.
Ong Lang: a quieter place to stay
North of Duong Dong, smaller properties

Ong Lang is north of Duong Dong. Its coastline includes sandy sections, rocky areas, and a range of smaller accommodation properties. It is a good choice for couples or anyone who wants to spend the day reading, swimming, watching the sunset, and eating dinner near their accommodation.
However, restaurants and services are more spread out than in Duong Dong. Depending on your hotel, you may need a motorbike or taxi even for an evening meal. Check the location carefully before booking, especially if you plan to go sightseeing every morning and eat out every night.
Should you change hotels during your trip?
For a 3-day, 2-night stay, usually not. Checking out, arranging transport, storing luggage, and waiting for another room can use up a substantial part of a sightseeing day.
For a 5-day, 4-night trip, changing hotels once can work well. For example, stay two nights in Duong Dong to explore the town and local restaurants, then spend two nights at Khem Beach or Sunset Town for swimming and Hon Thom.
Do not change hotels simply to avoid one taxi ride. Move only when you genuinely want to spend time in the new area.
What to do in South Phu Quoc
South Phu Quoc combines beaches, offshore islands, and large entertainment attractions. Sea views, island scenery, and photography make this area worth at least one full day.
Sao Beach: visit in the morning
Sao Beach, or Bai Sao, is on the southeastern side of Phu Quoc. It is known for its light-colored sand and shallow water along parts of the shoreline.

A good time to arrive is around 8-10 AM, particularly on weekdays. This gives you time to swim before the hottest part of the day and before more organized tour groups arrive.
Sao Beach can look a lot less clean and calm than promotional photographs suggest. Water clarity, floating debris, waves, and beach conditions change with the season and from one section of the beach to another. Some areas have restaurants, sun loungers, and water sports. Ask about charges before using any facilities.
Coming from Duong Dong, combine Sao Beach with other southern attractions on the same day. There is little point driving back to your hotel at lunchtime and heading south again in the afternoon.
Hon Thom cable car: worth nearly a full day
The Hon Thom cable car departs from Anh Duong Station in Sunset Town and travels above the sea and smaller islands of the An Thoi archipelago. The views from the cabin are one of the main reasons to take the trip.

Once you reach Hon Thom, you can visit Aquatopia Water Park, the Exotica entertainment area, and the beach.
In 2026, Sun World's round-trip Hon Thom cable car tickets start from VND 825,000 per person, depending on the ticket product and travel date. The standard adult price for the 2026 round-trip cable car and Mango buffet lunch combo is VND 1,150,000.
A practical day could look like this:
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 9:00 AM | Arrive at Anh Duong Cable Car Station |
| From 9:30 AM | Take the cable car to Hon Thom |
| 10:00 AM-12:00 PM | Water park or other attractions |
| 12:00-1:00 PM | Lunch and rest |
| 1:00-3:30 PM | More activities or beach time |
| Afternoon | Return by cable car according to the confirmed schedule |
| From 5:00 PM | Walk around Sunset Town and enjoy the sunset |
These times are only a suggested plan. Go by the cable car departures on your ticket.
Between the cable car, water park, lunch, and beach, you already have plenty to do without booking a separate island-hopping tour on the same day.
Sunset Town and Kiss Bridge: best in the late afternoon
Sunset Town is particularly attractive when the afternoon sun lights up the colorful buildings facing the sea. Around 4:30-6:00 PM is a useful general window for walking, taking photographs, and watching the sunset, although the actual sunset time varies throughout the year.
The area includes Kiss Bridge, public squares, the clock tower, and venues for organized shows.

In 2026, Sun World sells Kiss Bridge admission from VND 100,000. Shows such as Kiss of the Sea require separate tickets and are not automatically included with a standard cable car ticket.
Sunset Town is a purpose-built tourism and entertainment complex, not a traditional fishing village. Stay into the evening for the illuminated streets, entertainment, and photography. If your main goal is swimming, there is no reason to spend most of the day here.
An Thoi island hopping: for snorkeling and small islands
Boat tours commonly depart from the An Thoi area or from a meeting point arranged by the operator. Depending on the itinerary, they may visit islands such as Hon Mong Tay, Hon Gam Ghi, or Hon May Rut, along with snorkeling locations selected for the day's conditions.
Do not choose a tour based only on the number of islands it visits. A three-island itinerary may sound better than a two-island trip, but time spent traveling, taking photographs, eating lunch, and changing locations can leave surprisingly little time in the water.
Before booking, ask the operator about the boat, pickup location, actual snorkeling time, number of passengers, life jackets, and the cancellation or rescheduling policy if the sea is rough.
Do not stand on coral, touch reef structures, or take marine life home. If you cannot swim, tell the operator before booking and confirm which activities are suitable. Wear a properly fitted life jacket whenever required.
What to do in North Phu Quoc: Safari or VinWonders first?
The two major attractions in North Phu Quoc both take time. They are relatively close to each other, but you cannot explore both properly in just a few hours.
Vinpearl Safari: arrive when it opens
Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc is near Bai Dai and is generally open 9:00 AM-4:00 PM.
The park has animal exhibits, a vehicle-based safari experience through a semi-wildlife area, and educational activities.

Families with children should aim to arrive around 9 AM. Temperatures are usually more comfortable earlier in the day, and you have more time to attend scheduled activities.
Admission in 2026 is VND 950,000 for adults and VND 710,000 for children between 100 cm and under 140 cm tall, as well as eligible senior visitors.
Allow at least half a day if you are bringing young children. The park is large, there is walking involved, and some activities require waiting. Bring hats, drinking water, and comfortable shoes.
VinWonders: give it a full day
VinWonders Phu Quoc is also in the northern entertainment area. It includes themed attractions, thrill rides, a water park, and the Sea Shell Aquarium, also known as Neptune Palace.

General operating hours for 2026 are 9:00 AM-7:30 PM, but individual zones have their own schedules. For example, the aquarium is generally open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Adult admission in 2026 is VND 1,050,000, with tickets for children from 100 cm to under 140 cm and eligible visitors aged 60 and above at VND 800,000. Children under 100 cm are admitted free.
Combined VinWonders and Safari tickets are available, but check the price, validity period, and inclusions before purchasing. Some older pricing pages may still display different rates.
For families with children aged roughly five to ten, trying to fit a full Safari visit and all of VinWonders into one day can be exhausting. Split them across two days if your schedule allows.
Grand World: better in the afternoon and evening
Grand World is a shopping, dining, and entertainment area within Phu Quoc United Center. You can walk around its public spaces without buying a general admission ticket, although some attractions charge separately.
Experiences such as the Venice canal boat ride and Teddy Bear Museum have separate tickets. In 2026 they cost VND 200,000 per adult for each experience. The evening Quintessence of Vietnam show, known locally as Tinh Hoa Viet Nam, has a separate adult ticket price of VND 300,000.

From a hotel in North Phu Quoc, Grand World is an easy place to visit after your main attraction closes. Traveling all the way from South Phu Quoc just to have a drink here is unlikely to be worth the journey.
Where to go and what to eat in Duong Dong
Duong Dong does not have many large-scale entertainment attractions, but it works well for mornings and evenings when you do not want to travel far.
Dinh Cau Temple and Phu Quoc Night Market
Dinh Cau sits on a rocky outcrop near the mouth of the Duong Dong River. It is associated with local fishing communities and their religious traditions. The site also offers views of the sea and nearby fishing boats.

Visit in the late afternoon, spend around 20-40 minutes there, then head to the night market on Bach Dang Street.
The night market usually becomes lively from around 5 PM. Inside, you will find grilled seafood, snacks, souvenirs, and packaged local products.

It is good for an evening walk and sampling several dishes, but do not expect it to be the cheapest place on the island to eat seafood. For anything sold by weight, ask for the price per kilogram and the total weight before cooking.
Bun Quay Kien Xay
Bun quay is one of Phu Quoc's best-known local dishes. It consists of fresh rice noodles, seafood paste, a hot and relatively light broth, and a dipping sauce that you mix to your own taste.

You can look for Bun Quay Kien Xay at 28 Bach Dang Street or its branch at 69B Tran Hung Dao Street. Both locations are in Duong Dong, handy for breakfast or lunch.
Much of the dish's flavor comes from the seafood and dipping sauce rather than a heavily seasoned broth. Start with a small amount of chili if you do not like spicy food, and adjust as you eat.
Menu prices vary by branch and bowl type. Check the menu displayed at the restaurant before ordering.
Ra Khoi Restaurant and Xin Chao Restaurant
Two places are worth considering for a seafood meal with friends or family:
- Ra Khoi Restaurant, 131 30 Thang 4 Street: Good for groups ordering shared dishes such as fish, crab, squid, vegetables, and rice.
- Xin Chao Restaurant, 66 Tran Hung Dao Street: Known for its seaside seating, making it a suitable choice for a sunset dinner.
Xin Chao generally operates from around 11 AM to 9:30 PM. Book ahead for a table with a sea view rather than arriving just as the sun is setting.
There is no need to visit all three restaurants in one evening. Have bun quay for breakfast or lunch and save dinner for one seafood restaurant.
Visit a traditional fish sauce factory
Phu Quoc is famous for its traditional fish sauce, made by fermenting anchovies and salt in large wooden barrels.

At Khai Hoan Fish Sauce on Hung Vuong Street, or another traditional producer with a visitor area, you can see how it is made and buy gifts.
A factory visit does not need to take long. Before going, ask whether visitors can see the production area or whether the business only operates a retail showroom.
If you plan to fly home with fish sauce, check your airline's rules for liquids and checked baggage. Packing bottles in a foam box does not mean the airline will accept them.
Getting to Phu Quoc: plane or high-speed ferry?
Flying: the easiest option from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City
Phu Quoc International Airport uses the airport code PQC. Domestic flights connect the island with major Vietnamese cities, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. International visitors may also find direct flights depending on the season or connect through another airport.
From the airport to central Duong Dong, the journey generally takes around 20-30 minutes by car, depending on your hotel's location and traffic. Transfers to the northern and southern resort areas take longer.
Traditional taxis and ride-hailing services such as Grab and Xanh SM operate around the airport. Taxi companies at the airport include Mai Linh, Vinasun, and Saigon Phu Quoc Taxi.

An easy approach is to check the price in a ride-hailing app after collecting your luggage, then compare it with your hotel's airport transfer offer. For families carrying several suitcases, arranging a four- or seven-seat vehicle in advance saves negotiating transport after arrival.
Airfares vary considerably depending on the travel date, departure time, baggage allowance, and how early you book. For that reason, a single fixed airfare is not a reliable way to calculate every Phu Quoc holiday budget in 2026.
High-speed ferry: useful if you are traveling from the Mekong Delta
The two familiar ferry routes to Phu Quoc are Ha Tien - Phu Quoc and Rach Gia - Phu Quoc.
Ha Tien is the shorter sea crossing. In 2026, a standard adult Phu Quoc Express ticket on the Ha Tien - Phu Quoc route is VND 216,000 one way. Departures include 7:00 AM, 9:00 AM, and 11:45 AM. Schedules can change according to the date and operating conditions.
The Ha Tien crossing generally takes around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. High-speed ferries commonly arrive at Bai Vong Port on the eastern side of Phu Quoc. From there, you still need to arrange transport to your hotel. Do not confuse Bai Vong Port with the Duong Dong Night Market area.
The journey from Rach Gia takes longer because the sea crossing is farther. Travelers coming from Ho Chi Minh City also need to account for the road journey to the port, check-in time, the ferry crossing, and the transfer after arrival.
For a 3-day, 2-night trip from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, flying is usually more practical. Taking the ferry makes more sense if you are already in Ha Tien, Rach Gia, or combining Phu Quoc with a wider Mekong Delta trip.
How to get around Phu Quoc without overspending
Renting a motorbike
A motorbike works well for one or two people traveling with little luggage, provided the rider is licensed and comfortable covering longer distances.
In 2026, Phu Quoc Car Rental 247 rents a 2017 Honda Vision at approximately VND 150,000 per day and a 2022 Honda Vision at around VND 170,000 per day. Rental rates vary from one company to another and by model, so there is no fixed island-wide price.
Before accepting a motorbike, inspect the tires, brakes, lights, mirrors, and fuel level. Photograph the vehicle's existing condition. Ask whether the rental is calculated by calendar day or a full 24-hour period, and confirm delivery charges and deposit requirements.
If you do not have a valid license or are unfamiliar with long motorbike journeys, use taxis or hire a car instead. Phu Quoc has several major roads, but some access roads leading to beaches and residential areas are narrow, uneven, or poorly lit after dark.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis are a good option for families, groups of three or four, and days involving a longer journey from Duong Dong to An Thoi.
The easiest way to avoid unnecessary costs is to group attractions by location. For example, when exploring South Phu Quoc, combine Sao Beach, An Thoi, and Sunset Town rather than returning to Duong Dong after every stop.
Also plan your transport back after evening shows. Many visitors may request cars around the same time when a major performance ends.
VinBus
VinBus operates routes connecting parts of the island, including the airport, Duong Dong, and the northern Grand World - VinWonders area.
Public routes 17, 19, and 20 introduced zone-based fares effective January 1, 2026. Fares are VND 20,000 for travel within one zone or between adjacent zones and VND 50,000 for longer journeys covering the full route. Some customers with qualifying Vinpearl or VinWonders bookings may receive free transport under the relevant conditions.
This can be a useful budget option for solo travelers who are not in a hurry. Buses do not cover every journey a taxi can. Check the nearest stop to your hotel and the current timetable before your travel day.
Phu Quoc 3-day, 2-night itinerary for first-time visitors
This itinerary assumes you arrive by plane in the morning or around lunchtime on Day 1, fly home in the afternoon on Day 3, and stay in Duong Dong for both nights.
- Day 1
Arrive, check in, and explore Duong Dong
11:00 AM-1:00 PM: Arrive in Phu Quoc, travel to your hotel, and either leave your luggage or check in if the room is ready.
1:00-3:30 PM: Have lunch and rest. Avoid booking a long organized tour immediately after landing, as flight delays can affect your plans.
4:00-5:30 PM: Visit Dinh Cau Temple or a beach near your hotel. Along Long Beach, you can spend this time watching the sunset by the water.
6:00-8:30 PM: Visit Phu Quoc Night Market, have dinner, and walk around the surrounding streets.
The first day is for settling in and getting familiar with the island. There is no need to travel 30-40 km to a major attraction immediately after arriving.
- Day 2
Choose South Phu Quoc or North Phu Quoc
Option A - South Phu Quoc
Have an early breakfast and take the Hon Thom cable car during its morning operating window. Spend most of the day at the water park, having lunch, and relaxing near the beach. In the afternoon, return to Sunset Town, walk around Kiss Bridge, and have dinner near An Thoi or back in Duong Dong.
Not interested in water parks? Replace Hon Thom with Sao Beach in the morning and another nearby beach or attraction. There is no reason to buy an expensive cable car ticket simply because it appears in every suggested itinerary.
Option B - North Phu Quoc
Arrive at Vinpearl Safari around 9 AM and explore until lunchtime or early afternoon. Afterward, take a break and visit Grand World in the late afternoon and evening.
You can replace Safari with VinWonders if you prefer thrill rides, the aquarium, and the water park. Do not try to fit a complete Safari visit, the whole of VinWonders, and an extensive Grand World visit into the same day.
Both options work for a 3-day, 2-night holiday. Choose one.
- Day 3
Breakfast, shopping, and departure
Have bun quay or another local breakfast near your hotel. Time permitting, buy pepper, fish sauce, or packaged specialties from a reputable shop, checking baggage restrictions before purchasing.
Allow enough time to check out, collect your luggage, travel to the airport, and complete departure procedures. Do not schedule a trip to North Phu Quoc on your final morning if your flight leaves in the early afternoon.
If your arrival flight lands late on Day 1 or your departure flight leaves early on Day 3, a 3-day, 2-night holiday effectively gives you only one full sightseeing day. In that case, prioritize beach time and one major attraction.
How to plan 4 or 5 days in Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc 4-day, 3-night itinerary
Four days make it possible to explore both North and South Phu Quoc, although you still need to be selective.
| Day | Main activities | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival, Duong Dong, night market | Duong Dong |
| Day 2 | Safari or VinWonders, Grand World | Duong Dong |
| Day 3 | Hon Thom or Sao Beach, Sunset Town | Duong Dong |
| Day 4 | Breakfast, beach time, airport transfer | - |
This is a balanced plan for first-time visitors. Day 2 also works as a quieter day at Ong Lang Beach, a fish sauce factory, a pepper farm, or other local attractions.
Phu Quoc 5-day, 4-night itinerary
Five days leave room for both sightseeing and genuine relaxation.
- Day 1
Duong Dong
Arrive in Duong Dong, explore the town, eat local food, and watch the sunset.
- Day 2
Safari and Grand World
Visit Vinpearl Safari in the morning and Grand World in the afternoon or evening.
- Day 3
VinWonders or Ong Lang
Spend a full day at VinWonders, or choose Ong Lang Beach if you are not interested in theme parks.
- Day 4
Move south
Move to South Phu Quoc, visit Hon Thom or Sao Beach, and walk around Sunset Town in the evening.
- Day 5
Khem Beach and departure
Relax at Khem Beach, check out, and travel to the airport.
For this itinerary, you could spend the first three nights in Duong Dong and the final night in South Phu Quoc. Only change hotels if you actually want the experience of staying at a resort in the new area.
A snorkeling and island-hopping boat tour can take the place of one of these days instead of being squeezed into an already full schedule.
How much does a trip to Phu Quoc cost in 2026?
The three biggest variables are flights, accommodation, and attraction tickets. A traveler staying at a high-end resort and visiting paid theme parks every day will spend considerably more than someone staying in central Duong Dong, swimming at the beach, and eating at local restaurants.
Here is a planning budget for one person on a 3-day, 2-night trip, assuming two people share a room, outside major holiday periods.
| Expense | Estimated cost per person |
|---|---|
| Hotel for 2 nights, sharing a double room | VND 600,000-1,200,000 |
| Food for 3 days | VND 750,000-1,350,000 |
| Local transport, sharing vehicle costs | VND 400,000-900,000 |
| One major attraction ticket | VND 825,000-1,050,000 |
| Drinks, small purchases, and basic contingency | VND 150,000-300,000 |
| Estimated total | VND 2,725,000-4,800,000 |
This travel budget is based on 2026 prices, not a tour operator or hotel quote. It excludes return flights or ferry tickets, personal shopping, and additional paid water activities. The attraction allowance covers only one of the Hon Thom or VinWonders ticket options discussed above.
Budget travel
You can reduce costs by skipping theme park tickets, staying at a reasonably priced hotel near Duong Dong, visiting Dinh Cau, exploring the night market, relaxing along Long Beach, and spending a day at Sao Beach. In that case, an estimated on-island budget of around VND 1.9-3.3 million per person for 3 days and 2 nights may be reasonable, excluding transport to and from Phu Quoc.
Most of the savings come from avoiding expensive attraction tickets and reducing long taxi journeys; choosing the absolute cheapest room matters far less.
A more comfortable trip
Visiting Hon Thom, VinWonders, and Safari during the same holiday means adding the relevant admission tickets, meals inside the entertainment complexes, and transport costs.
The individual 2026 adult admission prices for VinWonders and Safari are VND 1,050,000 and VND 950,000 respectively. Before paying for both separately, check whether a valid combined ticket offers better value for your travel dates.
For a family of four, hiring a car for the day may sometimes be more economical than taking multiple individual taxis, especially when traveling with young children.
Costs travelers often forget
The first is airline baggage. A basic fare may not include the checked baggage allowance you need.
The second is transportation from the airport or ferry port. A hotel far from the town center can turn every restaurant outing into a noticeable taxi expense.
The third is services not included in admission tickets. These may include professional photography, beach loungers, water sports, buffet meals, evening shows, or priority-access services.
Finally, there is seafood. A dinner with several dishes priced by weight can easily exceed a modest daily food allowance.
What is the best time to visit Phu Quoc?
For beach activities, November to April is generally the more favorable period, with the dry season bringing less rainfall and more days of relatively calm sea conditions.
From May to October, rainfall becomes more frequent. During parts of the wet season, especially around the middle of the year, stronger waves and unfavorable weather can affect boat tours, snorkeling, and other outdoor activities.
That does not mean visiting Phu Quoc during the rainy season is impossible. There can still be sunny days, but you need more flexibility and should accept that some water activities may be rescheduled or canceled.
During this period, arrange your island-hopping tour or cable car day around the better weather forecast rather than fixing it immediately before your departure flight. Theme parks, shopping areas, restaurants, and hotel facilities can provide alternatives when outdoor plans change, although some attractions may also close temporarily in severe weather.
Detailed monthly weather, seasonal winds, and beach conditions are covered separately in the article Best Time to Visit Phu Quoc. For this itinerary, the practical rule is simple: schedule sea-dependent activities on the days with the best conditions and leave town-based sightseeing and dining more flexible.
What international visitors should know before traveling to Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc receives many international visitors, particularly at resorts, theme parks, and Sunset Town. Booking services in English is generally easier in these areas than at smaller local restaurants or businesses.
Visa and entry requirements
Vietnam has a special visa exemption policy for eligible foreign visitors entering Phu Quoc for a stay of no more than 30 days, subject to the relevant entry and travel conditions.
Entry requirements can depend on nationality, passport validity, arrival route, and onward travel plans. Check the current official rules before departure.
Money, mobile internet, and transport
Along with your passport and travel documents, bring a payment card that works internationally and some Vietnamese dong for smaller businesses. Mobile internet is useful for maps, ride-hailing apps, restaurant searches, and communicating with accommodation providers. Keep your hotel's address written in Vietnamese as well as English.
International visitors who want to rent a motorbike should verify that their driving documents are legally recognized in Vietnam rather than assuming the rental company's willingness to hand over a vehicle makes riding legal.
Common mistakes that waste time in Phu Quoc
Booking a hotel without checking the map
A resort at Bai Dai may look excellent in photographs but be inconvenient if you plan to visit An Thoi every day. Before booking, check the driving distance to two or three attractions you actually want to visit. A hotel described as being in Phu Quoc may be many kilometers from the places on your itinerary.
Planning too many attractions in one day
Safari, VinWonders, and Hon Thom can each take up a large part of a day. Choose one main attraction, then leave the evening for a lighter activity. A schedule full of names rarely makes a good holiday.
Forgetting to check cable car hours
The Hon Thom cable car operates according to specific time windows. It is not a bus service running continuously throughout the day. Check the return schedule when you arrive at the station rather than assuming there will be a cabin whenever you decide to leave.
Booking an island tour too close to your flight
Weather and sea conditions may change boat schedules. Place island-hopping tours in the middle of your holiday whenever possible, leaving room to adjust plans.
Assuming all beaches are the same
Sao Beach, Khem Beach, Ong Lang, and Long Beach differ in location, scenery, available services, and seasonal wave conditions. Choose the beach that fits your trip instead of trying to visit every famous name.
Not checking hotel facilities and conditions
Some resorts offer private beach access, shuttle services, and other facilities, but not every service is complimentary for every guest or room category. Read the room conditions carefully, and ask about beach access, breakfast, airport transfers, extra beds, and child surcharges before booking.
What to decide before booking your Phu Quoc holiday
Start by counting the hours you will actually have on the island. Arriving at 8 PM and flying home at 8 AM leaves much less time than arriving in the morning and departing in the evening, even though both bookings may be described as 3 days and 2 nights.
Next, choose one main priority: beach relaxation, Hon Thom, VinWonders, or Safari. Use that priority to select your accommodation area. Do not choose a hotel first and then try to build an entire itinerary around its location.
Finally, calculate the costs of food, transportation, and optional activities. Group nearby attractions on the same day, and do not force distant locations into an itinerary just to make it look complete.
A Phu Quoc holiday with enough time to swim, eat dinner comfortably, and enjoy the beach is usually more pleasant than one spent rushing between attractions and checking the time in the back of a taxi.
A secluded resort can wait. Choose Duong Dong for your first 3-day, 2-night trip to Phu Quoc and explore the island independently from there. Once you know whether you prefer the north or south of the island, you can spend several nights at a resort in that area on your next visit.
FAQ
How many days do you need in Phu Quoc?
Three days and two nights are enough for one major attraction, some sightseeing around Duong Dong, and beach time. Four days and three nights are better if you want to visit both the northern and southern parts of the island. Five days and four nights allow more time for relaxation without sacrificing sightseeing.
Is it better to stay in North or South Phu Quoc?
Stay in North Phu Quoc if your main priorities are VinWonders, Safari, Grand World, and large resorts. Choose South Phu Quoc for Hon Thom, Sao Beach, Khem Beach, and Sunset Town. If you have not decided on your itinerary, Duong Dong or the northern part of Long Beach is generally a more convenient base.
Do you need to rent a motorbike in Phu Quoc?
No. Solo travelers with a valid license and experience riding motorbikes may find renting one convenient. Families with young children, international visitors without legally valid riding documents, and larger groups should consider taxis, suitable VinBus routes, or a hired car.
How much does a 3-day, 2-night Phu Quoc trip cost?
For two people sharing a room, eating at moderately priced restaurants, and visiting one major paid attraction, you can budget around VND 2.7-4.8 million per person on the island at 2026 prices. This excludes return flights or ferry tickets. Skipping large theme parks can reduce costs substantially.
Do you need to book a tour to explore Phu Quoc?
Not necessarily. You can visit beaches, restaurants, town attractions, and major theme parks independently. Organized day tours are more useful for boat trips, snorkeling, and routes requiring a vessel and local operator. Compare the itinerary, pickup arrangements, extra charges, and rescheduling conditions before booking.
