Ha Giang Loop in buckwheat season: when to go, flower stops and travel options
The 12th Buckwheat Flower Festival opens on the evening of Sunday, October 25, 2026, in Dong Van, at the top of the Ha Giang Loop. For a Loop trip during flower season, start by choosing your travel dates, overnight stops and whether to use a local rider or a car; bloom conditions vary between fields.

When to go: opening night, bloom and weather
The festival opens on the evening of October 25 at Youth Square in Dong Van, under the theme “Âm vang miền đá” (“Echoes of the Stone Land”), according to the Tuyen Quang provincial portal. The start is expected at 8 p.m., according to a Tuyen Quang Party Committee news page. An older schedule listed November 6. If you booked a trip for the opening, check whether you can move your bus and room to October 25.
Bloom waves and when the flowers peak
About 400 hectares were sown in three waves so that the most bloom falls in opening week, with fields flowering one after another until the end of December. Dong Van commune sowed its last wave on September 20; Lung Cu planted about 70 hectares across 16 villages, staggered to last into early December. By October 17, 2026, flowers had opened in Pho Bang, Pho Cao, Sung La, Dong Van, Lung Cu and Ma Le.
For the opening night, be in Dong Van on October 25. For the flowers rather than the opening ceremony, consider late October or November. Check recent photos from the fields you plan to visit before fixing your dates.

Late-autumn weather on the plateau
In Dong Van, average daily lows and highs in 2021-2025 were about 16-22°C (61-72°F) in October, 13-20°C (55-68°F) in November and 9-15°C (48-59°F) in December, with some December nights near 2°C (36°F), based on Open-Meteo data. Lung Cu is higher and colder. Fog and drizzle become more common late in the season and make the roads slippery. Pack warm layers, a windproof jacket, gloves if you will be on a bike, and shoes with grip.
How to do the Ha Giang Loop: days, overnight stops and who drives
The Loop is about 350 km. A three-day plan could look like this: day 1 to Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Tham Ma and Sa Phin, sleeping in Dong Van. On day 2, choose stops around Lung Cu or Dong Van, then continue over Ma Pi Leng (Mã Pí Lèng) and stay in Meo Vac. Return to Ha Giang on day 3, allowing a buffer before your onward bus. To catch the opening night, make October 25 your first day so you are in Dong Van that evening. Allow four days if you want a slower pace or room to adjust the route in wet weather.
Getting to Ha Giang from Hanoi
Sleeper buses and “cabin” buses (with private pods) take about 6 to 7 hours from Hanoi to Ha Giang city, depending on the service and road conditions. Operators use different pickup points, so confirm the exact pickup address, check-in time and drop-off point with the operator before booking, and check the fare for your date and vehicle type. An overnight bus can reduce daytime travel, but allow time to rest before starting the Loop.

Easy rider, car or ride yourself?
- On the back of a local rider’s bike (easy rider): a sensible choice if you have not ridden mountain passes before. Before you pay a deposit, ask for a written contract or booking confirmation that names the driver, the bike, the route, rest stops and who is responsible in an incident. Since April 13, 2026, as VnExpress International reported, riders and bike providers in Tuyen Quang must work under such a contract with a licensed travel company. Every trip needs helmets and protective gear, and providers may not merge groups, change routes or swap drivers on their own.
- Car, jeep or minivan tour: suits families, older travelers and anyone who would rather not spend all day on a bike. Before booking, ask for photos of the actual vehicle and check the seatbelts, how many passengers share it, daily driving time and what the price includes.
- Riding yourself: only with the right licence and experience on mountain passes; holding a licence does not mean you are ready for this route. Under Article 57 of Vietnam’s road traffic law (in force since January 1, 2025), a valid licence means an international driving permit issued by a country party to the 1968 Vienna Convention, carried with your home licence for the same vehicle class. Separate arrangements apply to some countries. South Korean visitors, for example, need a Korean-issued international driving permit with category A for motorcycles, together with their Korean licence. Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, the only kind the US issues, are not on that list. Bikes up to 125 cc fall into Vietnam’s A1 class; bigger ones need class A.
Riding without a valid permit can mean a fine and an impounded bike, and the owner who rented it out can be fined too. If your paperwork does not qualify, book an easy rider or a car instead. Our guide to which permits Vietnam accepts explains the rules in more detail. The Tham Ma and Ma Pi Leng passes are long and steep with tight bends: ride slowly, never overtake on a curve, and stay off the passes after dark or in thick fog.

Where to see buckwheat flowers on the Ha Giang Loop
The festival fields sit mostly beside Highway 4C, the road from Ha Giang city up onto the Dong Van (Đồng Văn) Karst Plateau. Heading north from Ha Giang city, you pass them in this order:
- Quan Ba (Quản Bạ): Heaven Gate (Cổng Trời) and Thach Son Than, the first fields on the plateau and the closest to Ha Giang city.
- Yen Minh and Tham Ma (Thẩm Mã) slope: fields at the Yen Minh rest stop and around the Tham Ma switchbacks. Pull fully off the road before taking photos.
- Sung La and the Sa Phin area, now within Sa Phin commune: the road to Pao’s House, Lung Cam village with its rammed-earth houses, and the Hmong King’s Palace (Nhà Vương).
- Pho Bang and Pho Cao: Pho Bang alone sowed about 18 hectares, according to an early-October count.
- Lung Cu (Lũng Cú): Then Pa, Lo Lo Chai (Lô Lô Chải), San Tro, Ma Le and Ma So, around the foot of the Lung Cu flag tower.
- Toward Meo Vac (Mèo Vạc): the road down to the Nho Que (Nho Quế) hydropower boat landing and Pa Vi village.
Lo Lo Chai, a Lo Lo ethnic village of rammed-earth houses at about 1,470 meters, is about 154 km from Ha Giang city. It has paused construction from October 20, 2026, to the end of February 2027 to tidy up for the season.

Buckwheat also grows in Hoang Su Phi and Xin Man, but those areas lie to the west, off the Loop; add extra days if you want both. If you are traveling in southern Vietnam instead, a few plots are planted in Da Lat in some years; see the buckwheat entry in our Da Lat flower calendar.
Where to stay: Dong Van, Lung Cu or Meo Vac?
- Dong Van: closest to Youth Square and the Old Quarter, so the easiest base for the opening night and the products fair. In past seasons, weekend and festival rooms filled up; book early and pick a refundable rate.
- Lung Cu and Lo Lo Chai: homestays in rammed-earth houses next to the flag tower and the fields, handy for early-morning walks. At about 1,470 meters, nights are colder than in Dong Van.
- Meo Vac: on the far side of the Ma Pi Leng Pass, near the road down to the Nho Que River and Pa Vi village; the second night in the three-day plan above.
When booking, ask whether breakfast, bike parking, hot water and heating or electric blankets are included. People posing as guides or hotel managers have taken festival bookings and asked for bank transfers up front (a 2022 warning); pay a deposit only after confirming directly with the place you are staying.

Field etiquette and safety
The fields belong to farmers
- Some fields and gardens charge a small fee to walk in and take photos, and the amount varies. In 2024 one garden at the Suoi Thau grassland charged VND20,000 per person. Carry small notes.
- Stay on existing paths, do not trample or pick flowers, and take your trash with you.
- Ask before photographing people, especially children, and accept a no.
- Park on a pull-out or at a rest stop, never on the pass road or on a bend.
Before each pass
- Leave enough time to reach your accommodation before dark; some sections may be under road works.
- Do not drink before riding, and do not get on the back of a bike if your rider has been drinking.
- Youth Square gets crowded on opening night; agree on a meeting point if you are in a group.
What still needs confirming
- The official opening time: provincial sources currently say 8 p.m. is “expected”.
- Venues for the Lo Lo culture day (October 23) and the “Stone Spirit” rock show (October 31).
- Traffic diversions and parking around Youth Square on the night of October 25.
- Pickup points, departure times and fares for Hanoi-Ha Giang buses on your date.
- 2026 field fees at each stop, and how far each bloom wave has come week by week.
Before you go, check the Tuyen Quang provincial portal for updates, or ask your homestay about road conditions and the flowers.
FAQ
Are there still buckwheat flowers on the Ha Giang Loop in December?
Some late-sown fields may still be flowering. The 2026 planting schedule aims to extend the season into December, but check recent photos of the fields you plan to visit before booking.
Is Ha Giang still a province?
No. Since July 1, 2025, Ha Giang has been merged into Tuyen Quang province, and districts no longer exist. Dong Van, Lung Cu and Meo Vac are now communes of Tuyen Quang, and Sung La is part of Sa Phin commune. The name Ha Giang is still used for the Loop, buses and maps.
Can I ride the Loop with a US driver’s license and an AAA permit?
Not legally. Vietnam recognizes international permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, carried with your home licence; the US issues only 1949-format permits. Ride with a licensed easy rider or take a car tour instead.
What color are buckwheat flowers?
Small clustered flowers in white, pale pink or pinkish purple. Check recent photos if you want to know what color the flowers are at a particular field.
