Tet in Vietnam with fewer travel-day surprises
Do not rule out Vietnam because of Tet; cut the number of travel days first. One base with confirmed meals and accommodation can be more enjoyable than changing cities while services adjust their hours.

Tet visitors stroll beside flower displays on Nguyen Hue Street in Ho Chi Minh City.
If you want flower stalls and the bustle of preparation, visit before New Year’s Eve rather than saving the market for the first morning of Tet. Sellers also need to go home, while the holiday itself shifts toward family visits, worship and events with their own schedules. Moving one market visit earlier can make the difference between seeing the preparations and arriving after they have finished.
Separate New Year’s Day from the administrative holiday
Tet 2027 begins on February 6, 2027. The announced continuous break for civil servants and public employees runs from February 4 through February 10, seven days in total. The days before New Year’s Day already matter for travel and household preparations; do not mark only February 6 and assume everything around it operates normally.
Private employers have their own permitted holiday arrangements, so the seven-day public-sector period is not a universal closure calendar. Hotels, transport companies and attractions also set service schedules. If you are joining Vietnamese friends for a family visit, coordinate with the household and the return transport as well as your own days off.
Go if you can enjoy staying in one place
We would not cancel a trip simply because it overlaps Tet. A stay in one city or a hotel with confirmed meals can work very well. What needs adjusting is the expectation that every small restaurant, service and onward departure will remain available on demand.
If your main goal is a long list of street-food stalls, daily museum visits and frequent changes of city, move the dates if you can. If you want preparations, slower walks, time with friends and a less ambitious sightseeing schedule, the holiday has its own appeal. A smaller menu or a closed family business is part of people taking their own holiday, not automatically poor service.
Settle entry requirements well ahead of the break rather than beginning a working-day-based process at the last moment. A flight reservation does not establish that you can enter the country. If someone needs particular medication or food, arrange enough for the relevant period before shops adjust their schedules.
Some places close; others operate differently
Family restaurants, neighborhood markets and small shops may close or shorten hours around New Year’s Eve and the opening days. There is no common reopening date for an entire city. A map listing marked “open” is not enough to establish that you can eat there after a late flight. Ask about the actual date and service time, then keep the reply.
Hotels and many visitor services can continue operating, but confirm breakfast, restaurant meals, late reception and transfers separately. An open hotel does not necessarily serve three meals a day. A self-check-in apartment also offers a different level of help from a staffed reception when you arrive late at night.
For museums, monuments and amusement parks, use the individual venue’s holiday announcement. Last year’s hours are not a promise for the coming holiday. Where no schedule has been announced, keep the attraction optional instead of building your trip around an assumed opening time.
| Service | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Accommodation | Will someone receive you, and which meals will be served? |
| Restaurant | Is it open, does it accept bookings and is there a surcharge? |
| Attraction | What are holiday hours, last entry and any closed sections? |
| Transfer | Does the total include holiday charges, waiting and your pickup point? |
Secure the difficult journey before the small activities
Once your dates are firm, compare the long-distance journeys and accommodation nights that overlap the holiday. If you can, compare options several months ahead, prioritizing workable departure times and acceptable change or cancellation terms. When rail or bus inventory is not yet released, follow the operator’s own sales channel and book when your required departure becomes available.
Prioritize the return as well as the outward trip. An attractive room is less useful if you cannot get back in time for work or your international flight. For a group, verify that enough seats or berths are available together. The price of one remaining cheap seat cannot simply be multiplied by the number of travelers.
Airfares, bus tickets and rooms can change with the date, direction, category and fare conditions. There is no nationwide Tet surcharge percentage. Ask for a final total including taxes, service charges and any compulsory meal, plus cancellation and change terms. Compare the same passenger count and number of nights before deciding one option is cheaper.
The busiest day depends on where you are going
Before Tet, journeys toward family homes may be under pressure; toward the end of the break, travel back to workplaces can become busier. Resorts and pilgrimage destinations can follow a different pattern from downtown streets. We would not label one date the busiest everywhere in Vietnam.
The days around February 4 and February 10 deserve extra room if you are traveling with the public-sector holiday flow. Ask your carrier how early to arrive for your particular departure. Reduce complicated connections and follow the carrier’s advice about reaching the airport, station or terminal during the peak period.
A quiet street outside your hotel does not justify leaving later for the airport. Check-in queues, the availability of a car and the terminal approach can tell a different story. Reconfirm the reporting time and pickup location near departure, especially if an operator uses a different loading area during busy periods.
Choose a base you can enjoy when a favorite shop is closed
Hanoi (Hà Nội) suits travelers who want Old Quarter walks, pre-holiday flower shopping and meals arranged in advance. Hang Luoc (Hàng Lược) is associated with the seasonal flower market, but wait for the particular year’s announcement before treating its operating dates as settled. Do not assume stalls will still be fully trading on New Year’s morning. Museum-focused plans need separate venue checks.
Ho Chi Minh City (Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh) works if you prefer a large-city base, a hotel restaurant and walks through public spaces that are open. Put flower-street events into a timed itinerary only after their schedules are announced. Photographs from the previous season do not establish this season’s layout or hours.
Hoi An (Hội An) can suit a short stay with walking, meals and time to rest. Choose accommodation that confirms the food service you need and leave room to sit rather than filling every session with ticketed visits. If relaxation is the purpose, reliable services within the property may matter more than a famous street outside it.
Early-year festivals suit people who actively want a pilgrimage or festival atmosphere and accept crowds. Check the organizer’s schedule, dress appropriately and keep paths clear. You do not need a distant festival merely to make the holiday feel complete. Religious observances are not performances arranged for visitors’ photographs.

Ask when to arrive before deciding what to bring
Do not drop in unannounced on the first morning. Some households attach importance to their first visitor of the year, so let the host invite you and agree on a time. Ask whether to bring anything, whether the family has particular preferences and who else is expected. A modest, suitable gift is often easier to receive than an expensive surprise.
Greet older family members, notice the household’s shoe-removal practice and ask before photographing an altar or meal. A simple “Chúc mừng năm mới,” meaning Happy New Year, is enough. Explain dietary requirements or that you do not drink alcohol politely in advance; good manners do not require ignoring a health need.
Lucky money is a gesture, not an admission fee to a family celebration. If you want to prepare envelopes, ask your host about the household’s custom and choose an amount you are comfortable giving. Avoid comparing envelopes in front of children or expecting a gift to be opened immediately. Customs vary between families, so a rigid list of supposed universal taboos is less useful than listening.

A short route is easier to keep enjoyable
For a brief visit overlapping Tet, we would arrive before New Year’s Day, spend a session seeing flowers and preparations, and remain in the same base for several nights. Keep the first day simple: an open public walking area, a confirmed meal and time to rest. Add attractions once their service arrangements are clear.
If you must change regions, secure both travel directions and leave spare time before an international departure. Carry some small cash and a backup way to pay, and buy enough everyday essentials without stockpiling a week of supplies. A good Tet itinerary does not need a long list of places. It needs a dependable bed, a workable plan for main meals and a confirmed way to continue your journey.
